Here's an interesting web-based tool (or "online 'bot") - to help "predict" how successful your headline (for your ad) might be!

(It might be good for selecting possible book or article titles too, if you write books or articles...)

It's the "Emotional Marketing Value Headline Analyzer"! Give it a try (with your own headlines, if you like)! It's certainly fun, and kind of fascinating... And probably useful too!

I tried out the first 10 of "The 100 Greatest Headlines Ever Written" (from http://www.yellowpagesintoprofits.com/articles/100greatestheadlines.html - the list is originally from Victor Schwab's book "How To Write A Good Advertisement" )...

To help understand the results, they say... "most professional copywriters' headlines will have 30%-40% EMV Words in their headlines, while the most gifted copywriters will have 50%-75% EMV words in headlines."

(I took out any dashes in the headline for the purpose of testing...)

Here are the results...

1. THE SECRET OF MAKING PEOPLE LIKE YOU

Results...
EMOTIONAL MARKETING VALUE (EMV) SCORE: 42.86%
EMOTION CLASSIFICATION: Intellectual

2. A LITTLE MISTAKE THAT COST A FARMER $3,000 A YEAR

Results...
EMV SCORE: 20.00%
EMOTION CLASSIFICATION: Empathetic

3. ADVICE TO WIVES WHOSE HUSBANDS DON'T SAVE MONEY - BY A WIFE

Results...
EMV SCORE: 27.27%
EMOTION CLASSIFICATION: Spiritual

4. THE CHILD WHO WON THE HEARTS OF ALL

Results...
EMV SCORE: 37.50%
EMOTION CLASSIFICATION: Empathetic

5. ARE YOU EVER TONGUE-TIED AT A PARTY?

Results...
EMV SCORE: 50.00%
EMOTION CLASSIFICATION: Empathetic

6. HOW A NEW DISCOVERY MADE A PLAIN GIRL BEAUTIFUL

Results...
EMV SCORE: 44.44%
EMOTION CLASSIFICATION: Intellectual & Spiritual

7. HOW TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE

Results...
EMV SCORE: 42.86%
EMOTION CLASSIFICATION: Spiritual

8. THE LAST 2 HOURS ARE THE LONGEST - AND THOSE ARE THE 2 HOURS YOU SAVE

Results...
EMV SCORE: 20.00%
EMOTION CLASSIFICATION: Empathetic

9. WHO ELSE WANTS A SCREEN STAR FIGURE?

Results...
EMV SCORE: 57.14%
EMOTION CLASSIFICATION: Empathetic

10. DO YOU MAKE THESE MISTAKES IN ENGLISH?

Results...
EMV SCORE: 42.86%
EMOTION CLASSIFICATION: Spiritual

Well... Most of these headlines scored pretty well! (As you'd expect!)

Another interesting thing is, only one headline appealed only to the "intellectual" side of things... Most of the ads had an "empathetic" appeal... Hmm...

Would these headlines work today, do you think? Perhaps some would, some wouldn't... I know for a fact that many professional copywriters are still using the "Who Else Wants..." formula (see no. 9) for writing a headline nowadays, with successful results... That particular "formula" has been working for over 50 years! (That headline also got the highest score of the 10 headlines tested above... Coincidence? Hmmm....! )

Anyway, try out the tool for yourself, and see how it might help...

Dien
