Gary Halbert has a ton of great information on his site (http://www.google.ca/search?q=newspaper+ad+site%3Athegaryhalbertletter. com) concerning newspaper advertising. There are samples there and information involving split runs; when to advertise; what section to advertise in; how to get people to respond; etc...
Marketing legend Melvin Powers also has a great book on classified advertising (http://www.amazon.com/Making-Money-Classified-Melvin-Powers/dp/0879804351/ref=sr_1_3/103-0737500-8969468?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1178647988&sr=8-3) that you can find on Amazon for less than $10.
The same classified principles that work in newspapers work on Craigslist... ;)
