Gary H. puts the "smackdown" on Internet guru's!

Gary Halbert takes a stick to so-called Internet marketing experts... A real eye-opener of an article.

Take care,

Why I'd like to go to that seminar

Hi,

I'd like to go to Gary's seminar to learn about the no-cost full-page newspaper ads and the unscrewable merchant account methodology.

Anyone agree? Disagree?

Best,

- Boyd

My thoughts on that...

I thought the article was a great read - and well worth discussion both as a 'newsletter' and as a 'sales letter'. The only thing that really bothered me was his rant about the "experts" and their Alexa Ranking. Most people are well aware that an Alexa Ranking bears no truth as to actual traffic or profit.

My Alexa Ranking is 9,187 - Go figure!

This Is Disgusting, Not Eye-Opening...

This Is Disgusting, Not Eye-Opening...

Michael,

All I see is another sales-letter from Gary Halbert promoting one of his seminars.

The letter is tasteless and stupid (where is Gary Halbert of old days when he used to be subtle and humorous?).

But what surprises me most, the letter speaks volumes about Gary Halbert himself.

If you are a man and you forgive and promise NOT to ruin the young man's reputation, keep you word, don't ruin it in a roundabout way.

And one more thing.

Since when Gary Halbert is an Internet expert?

I don't remember one single instance where he was proactive in this field.

And to finish...

Psychologists maintain that the more somebody calls others 'fakes' the more chances he is a fake himself.

Me too.

It's interesting how many people who
have affiliate sales of the "Leonard Fumarto"
manual are upset by Halbert's expose. See
the other discussion boards as well.

I personally am happy to find out what
kind of a person Leonard is so I can
avoid him and his product.

The Halbert seminar sound great. After all,
this guy is a legend even though he can be
acerbic.

Gary Halbert is an expert... but... I had an issue with one thing too...

Hi Lynn,

I agree with you. I was also bothered by his rant on the "experts"... and how he justifies it with traffic ranking.

As Gary Halbert would undoubtedly know, in direct mail terms, it's not how many people you are mailing your letters out to, but also the QUALITY of your list - how well it is targeted for the product you are selling.

In internet terms, it's not just the AMOUNT of your traffic, but also how TARGETED that traffic is for what you're selling. Lots and lots of untargeted traffic does not necessarily turn into profits. OF COURSE Gary Halbert already knows this...

Because of that, in reality, the traffic rankings are almost meaningless - because it depends on what business you're in. Amazon.com had a number 7 ranking in traffic, according to the Alexa list. Yet Amazon.com is still losing money. (You can check this up because Amazon.com is a publicly traded company - look up "AMZN" on a site like http://investor.msn.com .)

This is not to take anything away from Gary Halbert's own achievements. I think his "Nancy" letter is still the most-mailed letter in direct-marketing history. You can read it here...

http://www.sowpub.com/cgi-bin/forum/webbbs_config.pl?read=6751

As I said, Gary already KNOWS this stuff...

I only know something about some of the names on his list. But what I do know about some people on that list is quite impressive. I can't vouch for everyone, but several on that list really are experts at what they do.

I know some people bad-mouth Gary Halbert online - something I totally disagree with. He's a marketing master, and his newsletters are a MUST-READ. But... it also goes the other way. Many of those with those "low" traffic rankings are in-fact getting highly TARGETED traffic for what they're promoting.

And much of their promotion is done through "email" anyhow (through their own "opt-in" lists) - so may not show up on the the traffic rankings until they make a sale.

Gary Halbert - madman, or genius?

Hi Boyd,

One thing Gary has done by generating this controversy is to ensure that everyone will talk about it. And by talking about it - everyone will come to know about his seminar.

So - is he a madman - or a genius?

It's definitely not the first time in history that controversy has been generated to make some sales. It goes back to the days of P.T. Barnum!

Just watching this saga is an education in itself.

Who is George Hailing?

I followed the link and found some info on George Hailing?

Who is (was?) he? Where can I buy his books?

I ran a google search on him but didn't find good results - just 11 sites - and a few were testimonials...

I would love to read more on him.

Some info about George Haylings...

Hi Ankesh,

We acknowledge George Haylings as the inspiration for The Great Ideas Letter. He researched and put together business ideas for about half a century. I think he published his newsletter from about the 1930s until the early 1980s.

You can read a little more in our press release acknowledging this.... You can find it here

http://www.prweb.com/releases/2002/8/prweb44727.php

Terry Alexander currently has the rights to sell one of his books - where he put a number of his articles. You can find it here

http://www.infobooklets.com

Apparently George Haylings is still around, though he is quite elderly now. His contribution to entrepreneurship is immense!

Re: This Is Disgusting, Not Eye-Opening...

Spot on Simon.

The thing we despise most in others is the thing we despise most in our selves.

What an insulting letter, from a web site that is entitled "The most valuable website on the entire internet".

The basic value is how not to ... I think I'll send my clients there to show them what not to do.

He has this secret software that can tell how hard you type 0's and 1's into your compter (I think that's called vapour ware ... isn't it? Something in someone's imagination)

""(Why should they? After all, most people are idiots ..... There are only (to my knowledge) seven of these software programs in the world. As far as I know, even the CIA and NSA don't have one. ""

So how to win new clients ... insult them by calling them iddiots and as well tell blatent untruths.

This guy doesn't deserve to use my bandwith or screen space.
