Document Tracking and Control?

What's a good way of tracking documents and helping them with the process of creation to approval? I think we need one in my workplace and I'm planning to make a proposal for a budget approval. Is there a software for this?

From Wikipdia:
The review process typically follows these steps:
  1. Document created by owner/author
  2. Sections of the document which need further editing are shared with other authors (co-authors)
  3. Edits collated and input into the original document
  4. Document shared with other contributors (e.g. subject-matter experts, colleagues, partners, suppliers, and consultants) for review
  5. Contributors review the document. Typically this review includes:
    • Identifying typos
    • Identifying syntax & other grammatical errors
    • Altering content
    • Adding or deleting content
  6. Reviewed content is returned to the owner/author
  7. Owner/author inputs changes and comments to the document as appropriate
  8. The review cycle is completed
FROM Docsvault, this is an interactive infographic

Hope this helps.

PS. At Suarez Corporation Industries, they used envelopes which every time a document changed hands, it had to have a signature on it. These giant envelopes provided a trail of who handled the document.

Maybe , you are referring to a DMS ( document management system). It is capable of keeping record of the various versions created which includes history tracking. It is also related to a workflow management. I agree with GordonJ that you must follow necessary steps for that.

Thanks for the tips!!
Are document control software the same as document management system? I found this one which looks very promising. I'll check out some of their whitepapers later to get more info.
