Indesign vs Quark

Man......, the decision to invest in either Indesign or Quark has been a challange for us. With so many opinions, articles, and websites (indesignvsquark.com), our heads have started spinning.

So to add to the confusion, I wanted to know if anyone on this site familiar with this software, have any input?

We currently use the old version of Quark, but it is now time to upgrade.

Thank you for your time and input.

Re: Indesign vs Quark... Others with information overload too...

Doesn't matter what web site...

Ask a 1,000 people...

Get a 1,000 different answers... :)

Probably lots of others out there with information overload too...

Turn your Problem deciding into an Indesign vs Quark “Buzz” business concept...

Purchase both... Return the one you don't like...

And/Or...

Do a series of Indesign vs Quark case studies...

Contests, surveys, press releases etc. etc...

Develop a line of related Hotsheets/Cheatsheets, ebooks and reports...

Why not just “Cash in” and have Both Indesign & Quark for Free...

Maybe even Free Review copies...

Bet with some Smart and Creative targeted thinking and research...

There's some Undiscovered... Indesign vs Quark content just waiting to be matched with particular Advertisers...

Lots of questions, opinions and debates going on... Some old, some recent... But still good food for thought...

Re: Indesign vs Quark

I had nearly 20 years in prepress/graphic design and used both on a daily basis. I was a staunch Quark supporter for years, the only real competition was Pagemaker, and it was very clunky and counter intuitive. The debut of InDesign was horrible, but by version 3 (CS1) they had surpassed Quark by leaps and bounds in my opinion.

Adobe has dominated the market and the rumors of Quarks demise are continually growing (Quark laid off a lot of people last August as their sales continue to decrease). Also, there are a lot of print shops that refused to upgrade to or support Quark 7 when it was released (not a problem if you can export a quality print ready PDF from it, but from my experience, very VERY few people can do so). I honestly don't know what they have in store with version 8, but it needs to be a knock out for them to just stay in business.

Also consider that you can purchase the entire Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat) for little more than the cost of Quark.

You may also want feedback from others who are currently in the trenches dealing with both layout programs. Check out http://www.b4print.com/forums/ and post your question there. And if you currently send any work out to print shops, definitely get opinions from the people who will be processing your files. Their opinions will carry more weight than every anonymous Joe in the internet put together.

My choice is Indesign

Thanks for asking.

For the print pubs I did, I used Pagemaker to create a PDF file I sent to the print shop, or took to the print shop on a USB Drive. The print shop used Indesign.

Mike Winicki used Pagemaker for his print pub

One Glossy Mag Owner/Editor I spoke with said... he would write the editorials etc. in Word and send them and images to his Layout guy to put together as a PDF file the printer could use. His layout guy used Indesign.

As Todd said, it would appear that Indesign is becoming the Industry Standard.

I am quite happy with my old version of Pagemaker. And if I felt the need to upgrade, I'd go with Indesign

Re: Indesign vs Quark - Thanks to All

After our meeting Friday, your input, and speaking with a few printers, we will go with Indesign.

One printer said in his opinion, the way Quark replaced Pagemaker years ago, he sees the trend with Indesign replacing Quark (even though Quark Express 8has shown much promise, he thinks that it is too late).

Our layout people are not thrilled because of the higher learning curve, but one Quark Convert stated that after you get past that part, most people adjust. Plus, with Quark, you still have to purchase some type of software, such as photoshop anyway, so run with CS3.
