$3,040 Today!

Hey! I'm excited!

It's now 4:30 in the afternoon. I just got back from a SIX Sale day....like "picking up dollar bills off the street"! I went out and made some sales calls at 10:30am...took off for lunch at 11:30...went back out at 2pm and headed home at 4pm.

So...for a total of 3 hours "work"...I collected $3,040 from 6 local businesses!

With my "Tv Channel Listings" guides which are placed in Hotel Rooms.

Yesterday afternoon (Weds) I decided to put together my "Sales Pitch" for the 3 Hotels (total of $245 rooms) that have agreed to have little ol' ME provide them with my FREE "TV Channel Listings guides...which are nothing more than sheets of LAMINATED Card Stock....with the Hotel's Logo at top... the TV Listings in the middle and an ad for a Pizza Delivery biz at the bottom... on side 1....and 5 ads on side 2. (2 fast food places, 2 sit down restaurants and 1 realtor)

This was all done with about $2 worth of paper and ink (on my inkjet) and $5 to have my local copy shop laminate some Sample Sheets...a $3, 3-ring binder and 4 Top Loader Sheet Protectors (about another $1)

Just goes to show...it does NOT take "money to make money". It's ALL in... "WHAT'S ON THE PAPER!"

Allright....I will tell you 'WHY" people are paid ME $3,040 to be on MY "Sheets of Paper";

1) The 2nd most frequent call the front desk of any Hotel/Motel gets is ... "WHERE'S THE TV CHANNEL LISTINGS?" (The MOST calls come from guests asking "Where Do We Eat?")
The hotels/motels TRY to keep their "Sheets of Tv Listings" on the desks of their rooms BUT....these are usually typed on 20lb bond and most wind up getting mixed in with newspapers and other "garbage" in the room... HOWEVER, the maids in these places do not promptly replace all these "Tv Listing Sheets". (Sometimes these are laminated but, makes no difference)

Therefore...when "I" "ride up on my white horse" and show them a way to "STOP" these phone calls AND...provide MORE SERVICE to their guests....they let ME "do MY thing"!...and provide them with MY program.

2) Local eating places or businesses (like realtors and Gift Shops) can see INSTANTLY...the benefit to their businesses...of having an ad for their biz IN EVERY ROOM....THAT WILL BE REFERRED TO AND SEEN 5 to 10 Times an evening by the occupants of the rooms.

This is called "Captive Audience" advertising!

AND...couple the above with the fact their are LIMITED SPACES on my Guides...where they realize, upon seeing my samples, they had better join me NOW...because the spaces are going fast and there's not many of them!

This is one of those..."Wham-Bam-Thank-Ya-Mam!' type of deals where they know they'd better "pee or get off the pot!"....no dilly-dallying here.

So...I am able to walk into a business...find the owner...show him my samples...tell him where they are going and for how long...and how much a space will cost him (I also build in some Incentives for making an "instant" decision) and it's either Yay or Nay. I either get the OK and a check or I go to the next business.

$3,000 in a day...from a simple idea!

Granted...I don't do this every day. I don't have the energy anymore. But hey...if I do this once a week....or once a month....how bad ya doin'?...on an investment of $10?

Thanks for reading,

Don Alm

P.S. I understand that most of the viewers here would rather disect dead bodies in a CSI Lab....than make a "Sales Call" on a business....HOWEVER, when you get tired of trying to make some extra money from the internet...and "reality" sets in....you MIGHT want to consider 'selling something" to local business people...something they are willing and able to pay for...because it will benefit them. When THAT DAY comes...maybe you'll remember this post.

To DEbunk

Don,

Thanks for telling us about your day.

I'd like to Object to a Common Phrase Debunk - yes, I need to Debunk the Debunking. Let me explain...

You wrote...

Quote:

it does NOT take "money to make money

As if to Debunk the common held thought, "It takes money to make money".

However, the common phrase is More Right than the debunk.

You see, it Does take money to make money. Maybe not your own, but somebody's. Because as Glenn has be known to say... ALL money comes from other people.

So while you might Think you did what you did without money, that's not actually accurate. It did take money - some of your own to buy folders, or someone else's to buy folders; the money which had been invested into the hotels in the first place - without which you would have No location. And so on.

You might think this is being Picky. But it is Not. It is being Accurate, the alternative is just plain sloppy. Sloppy like saying, "The sun went behind some coulds," or likewise.

So I am Debunking the debunk. It DOES take money to make money... just not always your own.

Re: $3,040 Today!

When I use the term, "It does not take MONEY to make MONEY!"....I am using the word "Money" in a "comparative" form.

Starting a business project with $20, to me, is "NO Money"!... .... COMPARATIVELY!

Even though 20 bux is...."money"....it is LOW money compared to BIG Money of a few thousand to start a business program.

So....if I had said, "It does not take "BIG" money to make "Big" money!" you would probably not have "parsed" my comments.

Or...if I had said..."It takes LITTLE Money to make GOOD money!"...these phrases possibly wouldn't have clicked into your "radar" to cause you to respond on this point.

Re: $3,040 Today!

Don,

Thanks for clarifying.

Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your POV, I would have Still jumped in if you had said Big money or Little money because they are Blanket Statements which are factually Incorrect.

If you want to make Big money you need someone with Big money to spend it with you - or several smaller monied people, or Many little money people. Notice how, in each case, the money is still other people's.

But more important than that is...

Their Desire To Spend it.

In this regard I am Also against Dan Kennedy saying, "if you can't make money without money, you can't make money with money" because it is also Factually Incorrect.

For example: Imagine a place. A Kingdom. The King has ALL the money. The peasants have None. NOw here's the rub...

The single thing that the peasants have to offer, in exchange for some of the King's money, is their Labor. But, if they do not want the King's money, then it doesn't matter how much money the King has, because he cannot get anything done with it.

So for a Transaction to take place, the King must desire something to be done and to pay for it with his money - and - the peasants must desire to have some of that money. A peasant with a desire for money but a King with no desire for building or buying, ends in nothing. Just like a King with a Desire for building but peasants with No desire for his money.

Factually, it DOES take money to make money. It also takes a desire for someone to Spend that money and for someone else to want the money they want to spend.

Kennedy would be more accurate if he said, "If you cannot make money without your own money, you will not be able to make money With your own money." Because the simplest money I can make, even if I have no money, is to sell my labor.

It would be more accurate to say, "It doesn't take your Own money to make money" and a slight twist, "It doesn't need to take a Lot of your own money to make money."

The other versions - Keenedy's and what you posted - are just plain wrong. A result of Laziness to express the Correct meaning. No different than saying the Sun "Rises" or "Sets" or goes "Behind a Cloud". And similar to when people say, "Oh, I forgot..." - they did Not forget did they, as they are saying it right now (they actually remembered, just not When they wanted to).

To relay a Quote which Victor Schlosser once said, "I've seen hell. It's a place where no-one says what they mean, or means what they say. I live that hell everyday of my life."

Re: $3,040 Today!

2 + 2 = 4.

Who says thats true? How do you know? Why is 2 + 2 not 5 or 6 or 7?

We come upon the symbolic meaning behind words and alphabets. 2 + 2 = 4 because everyone says so. Everyone agrees to it.

Its the same with gold or paper money. Gold has value because everyone agrees that it has value.

(Most people have become insanely rich not by trading their labour - but because they took advantage of the difference between value different people assign to the same thing - arbitrage / trade / chattling. But thats another discussion.)

Anyways, my point is: "if you can't make money without money, you can't make money with money" maybe factually incorrect. But its symbolically correct. Everyone who reads that knows that Dan Kennedy is talking about the person's own money. Not the community money. "If you can't make money without community money, you can't make money with community money" - doesn't make much sense. So people don't take it into account.

"I've seen hell. It's a place where no-one says what they mean, or means what they say. I live that hell everyday of my life."

That statement is factually incorrect too. How can you live a place?

To communicate, you have to forget such factual incorrectness and jump for the symbolic correctness. Yes there will be communication errors this way - but its the best we've got. Because if you try to be 100% factually correct, you'll be writing 20 pages of footnotes for every one sentence (and you'll need 20 pages of footnote for each sentence in the footnote too... and 20 pages of ----).

Just like this:
http://fair-use.org/mind/1895/04/wha...id-to-achilles

The best you can hope for is try being as clear as possible without sounding silly.

Way to go Don!

I have got to hand it to you. I can sell directly and I have gone out cold-calling. But you make the case for ENJOYING it! You seem to have more fun talking to folks than anyone I've seen.

I like to talk to folks too....the difference with you, is that you have shown us time and again how to make it profitable.

THANKS.

Ankesh,

I'm confused.

Do you think Michael understood what Don thought he was saying, or did Don say what Michael thought he understood him to say????? : )

I think you're 100% right . . . it's the understanding imparted by the symbols (words) that's important . . . not the particular symbols themselves.

If you can get your concept across, with understanding by the other party, you have communicated. Regardless of the words used.

Getting stuck in the "proper" use of words is like viewing a painting with a microscope. It may be interesting, but it is not necessary to get the viewpoint the artist intended to convey.

Anyway, that's one man's opinion . . .

Hi Millard....yep....ya gotta ENJOY what ya do. I REALLY ENJOY going into a business....meeting the owner...showing him/her how I can bring them more business...quote a price and get them to write me a check.

VEERY REWARDING for ME! They could drop me from a plane and within a day, I'd have figured a way to make money without "looking for a job".

THIS "TV Channel Listing" thing is soo easy. The hotels go for this right off, in fact...I've been wanting to get to the Coast before bad weather hits so, I'm going to pick a town...go get 3 hotels to give the OK for my Guides and 1 of them WILL give me 3 nights FREE LODGING. Also, I will be trading off MEALS with the restaurants I put on these.

YOU could be doing this in Branson!

Oopps. Sorry. Branson has too many "Corporate" restaurants and hotels where the "Decision-Maker" is back in Chicago or Denver or LA...in their "Corporate" offices. Forget that! Give me small towns anyday...where there's Mom & Pops who can "give me a decision NOW...Yay or Nay!"

I just revamped my Guide piece whereby I can get 6 Ads on the front and 4 on the back of a larger piece....10 ads for a nifty 4 Grand Gross. Not bad for 2 or 3 days "work".

Thanks for asking Hugh :)

My post was in response to Michael's post. Not Dons.

I have a very high opinion of Michael - he usually understands not only what is written - but things that are unwritten too. He gets the complete picture.

I'm not sure about the reason behind Michael's post to Don (you'll have to ask him). But I thought I had to reply to his post - and so I did. :p
