Mapping Your Mind

First off, let me say I took the advice of Dien and several others and visted Julie's web site, 5passions.com. If you haven't been, it's well worth the visit. I spent some time there, requested the free e-book, read some articles, followed some links, etc. It's worth your time. Nice site Julie.

While I was there, I followed Julie's suggestion and looked at some of the mind mapping sites she recommends. Mind mapping is not totally foreign to me. I'm also familiar with mind storming and brainstorming as I'm sure are many of you. Anyway, I went to the sites and looked at the examples. Even printed some of them. It looks like a great concept except for one small thing. Everything I saw told you how to create to a mind map but they left out one tiny detail. They don't tell you how to *use* it once you've got it! Once you've created this thing of beauty, what do you *do* with it? Maybe I'm too left-brained, (Yes Gordon. I've been called worse. *g*), but for the life of me, I could not figure out what to do with the thing once I created it. I mean it has all these circles, arrows, whatever on it, but how do I draw conclusions from it, make decisions from it, whatever? Maybe it's just me but I seem to be missing something fundamental here.

Hey Rick!

Thanks for the kudos! And you are right, that is a missing link....the hows and all of that....(notice a soon to be published book coming out on the very topic!)

Thanks again for visiting 5Passions. Hope to see you around again soon.

Well deserved. Your web site is a bright spot in a forest of junk. I used to review web sites for Dave Bancroft's, (No Gordon. Not *that* Dave Bancroft. A different one. Seriously.), Focus Marketing Awards. You just wouldn't believe how many e-marketers are totally clueless. And I reviewed sites from some "big boys and girls" too. You just wouldn't believe some of the junk I saw. Anyway, I'm pleased to say your site makes it's obvious that you "get it." I'll soon be reading your free e-book and replying to the e-mail you sent me. Heck. I might even sign up for one or two of your e-zines. *g* I haven't seen any good motivational discussions since the MasterMind group folded earlier this year.

Aha! And who might be the author of such a book? *VBG*

BTW, I have to tell you, I downloaded MindMan and I'm no closer to understanding what to *do* with the end result than I was when I started.

A Practical, Useful Example of How to....

Hi Rick!

I think I answered one way I do this from another post I just made WAYYYY down this thread, but I wanted to be sure to shed some more light to your question as well as a question of Dien's:

Here is more on how I actually USE the information I discovered while mindmapping to write an article, or make a speech, or as an illustration in coaching, or whatever application I can possibly imagine.

Thanks for helping to bring ME clarity as well, Rick!

Joyfully,

JULIE

Well, I read the example you gave and I see how you kept it focused on the topic. But what did you *do* with the information once you had it?

You're welcome.

BTW, if you replied to my last e-mail, sorry I haven't yet gotten back to you. My notebook computer crashed and I can't get to that e-mail account right now. I'm supposed to have a replacement computer tonight and *if* the hard drive is good, (if not I'm in *real* trouble), I should be able to get it back up fairly quickly.

***I have used the informationto to write an article and to give a talk. You know, one thing about mindmapping is they are sort of burned into your brain since you are using symbols/words/associations, etc, so it is VERY impressive to not bring notes when speaking. I like to walk around the room when I speak.....so it makes it REALLY fun.

I read SOMEWHERE that one can't write an outline until all the thinking is done. With mindmapping, as you become more proficient you create your outline as the thinking happens.
I think as with any other skill, it takes time, effort, energy and practice to become a skilled mindmapper. Thats one of the challenges with current mindmap books. Many are theoretical, and not about creating and actually using one.

****Would you please send me a quick email when you are back on line again? We can take it from there!

Have a fantastic weekend if we do not touch base before then!
