Hey Bob,

Wordpress is very good and could be used for a membership site, but keep in mind that since it is free, you'll be the one responsible for making it work and keeping it going if any problems arise. Same goes for Joomla which is also a competent system, but if you don't know what you're doing and how to get help when needed, it could be more trouble than it's worth.

I know a number of people who use either Joomla or WordPress with Amember to manage the membership portion of their site and seem to do pretty well.
