Default How to sell your used car....quick.

Just came from lunch with a buddy who bought. A couple of weeks ago he told me he'd like to "get rid of his old clunker" BUT....didn't want to do a Trade-In at a dealership.

I told him how I've sold some of mine "INSTANTLY".

Run ads in classifieds or Craig's List to have prospects phone.

Tell EVERY CALLER to come by at THE SAME TIME! I prefer to use
Saturdays
at 10am

Seems to fit for most prospects.

Now.....the 1st buyer will arrive 15 to 20 min b4 10. I go out to greet him. I tell him a little about the car.....he walks around it.....rubbing his chin.... then asks if I'd "take X$".

I rub my chin and stall around.....waiting for the next buyer to show. Sure nuff, up drives another prospect (about 5 to).....I give him some details. He walks around the car.....rubbing his chin (pondering)

Then potential buyer 3, 4 and 5 come by. I give some info to them and then, I yell out: "First one who's willing to pay X$.....gets it.

Car usually sells right then and there....for a price YOU WANT.......which happened last Sat with my buddy.

I think it's an EGO thing or...."the Spirit of Competition".

Sure beats having buyers come by at different times.

Try it.

Default Great approach! Here's how to also "turn the tables" when you want to buy...

Hi Don,

I wish I knew of your system when I last sold a car (which was quite a long time ago, I have a tendency to drive my cars till they give up the ghost...!).

I'm sure it must work better than the "look at the car at different times" approach.

One way to look at it is the "supply and demand" way...

When, you have a lot of people looking at the car at the same time, you create a situation where there is a lot of "demand" (lots of buyers), but very little "supply" (there's just one car)!

This kind of situation (high demand, low supply), according to the economists, drives up the price...

As usual, it's quite a brilliant approach!

By the way, that's also why, if you want to buy something, it can make sense to run a "wanted" ad. Why is that?

It's because, when you run a "wanted" ad, you turn the tables.

When the sellers are coming to you, you have a large "supply" (lots of sellers), and little demand (just one buyer). In this situation, according to "supply and demand," you can get a lower price, since they're competing with each other to sell to you!

Makes sense, especially if you're going to buy stuff for resale...

If you ever watch any of those "pawn shop" reality TV shows (I sometimes watch "Hardcore Pawn"), you can see it in action... They can sometimes buy stuff for pennies on the dollar. It works that way partly because people are coming to them - they create a situation with lots of sellers, and just one buyer.

Thanks Don, for sharing another profitable and educational story from the "field of battle!"

Knowing about this will, without a doubt, help to skyrocket your profits!

Best wishes,

Dien

Hi EE,

I love Cialdini's "Influence"... It's an amazing book!

I know one guy who bases his whole selling method on that book, like a checklist...
  • Reciprocity... check!
  • Commitment and Consistency... check!
  • Social Proof... check!
  • Authority... check!
  • Liking... check!
  • Scarcity... check!
Cialdini talks a lot about car selling... He actually worked as a car salesman as research for his book!

However, I searched thoroughly through "Influence" (using the "search" function in the ebook version)... I couldn't find Don's method, however. You sure it's in there?

Most of where Cialdini talks about selling cars is from the viewpoint of professional car salesmen... Like adding extra costs after the decision to buy has been made, and other forms of "low-balling"...

There's a wealth of great stuff in Cialdini's book (not only "unethical" things like "low-balling," but "ethical" methods too, like giving gifts)...

By the way, I've started making notes from some of the posts here on Sowpub... Wow, there's a lot of "gold" hidden in these posts. For example, I just wrote an entry on "position yourself as an expert" (from a recent Steve Shulenski post), and "Create and sell programs that have RESIDUALS" (Don Alm post), and Gordon's post on "How to write a specialty report," and Glenn's posts using various powerful referral techniques...

However, I have no doubt that Don's technique works to get a better sale (and bigger profits)! Personally, I've only seen this mentioned here in Don's posts... I tried to find it in Cialdini's "Influence," but I couldn't find it.

Best wishes,

Dien

Dien......your mention about "Selling Cars" brings to memory waay baack in 1979 in Carter's last year.....I was living in the Aspen Co area and a guy in my church asked me if I'd come work for him 30 days to see if I could "come up with some Marketing Ideas" to help his sales.

If you remember, the last year of the "Carter-Regime".....Interest Rates on most everything, especially Vehicle Financing, went thru the roof.....over 20%. So....until Reagan got in and began bringing things "back to normal" and out of the hands of "Lefties".....times were VERY TOUGH in the car biz.

So....the guy offered to pay me a Nice Chunk PLUS the use of an "All Terrain JEEP" I could plow around Aspen with.

I came up with 2 things that he continued to use for years after;

1) Since the Dealership was in Glitsy-Ritsy Aspen.....I KNEW that the Rich would try to camouflage their Richness by wearing somewhat "shabby" or "mundane" clothes.....HOWEVER.....I knew that the "rich" ALWAYS took care of 3 things; Their Teeth....their Fingernails AND....THEIR FEET!

So.....my 2nd day on the Lot, in walks a guy wearing a shabby T-Shirt and Levi's....BUT.....his teeth were Sparkly White when he smiled....I couldn't see his fingernails BUT....he was wearing a pair of $1,500 Tony Lama cowboy boots!

So....it wasn't my "UP" (That's car sales lingo for, "My Turn") and the sales guy whose turn it was, looks at the "prospect" and asks me if I'd take this "Up". I said, "Sure! Not acting too excited)

I proceed to sell the guy THREE TRUCKS at FULL PRICE! His name was "Leon Uris" the guy who wrote "Exodus" which also became a movie.

2) I also noticed that when anyone brought their older vehicles in to trade, their MAIN purpose was to get as MUCH as they could....even though the thing was a "Bucket of Bolts" or had been in a wreck...etc.

The sales person would look at the vehicle....get in and start the engine and maybe drive it a block or 2.....with the owner sitting in the passenger seat .

They'd come back and the sales guy would try and negotiate DOWN while the owner would negotiate UP. This brought my little brain to think: "I wonder if there's a way to get the owner to "FESS-UP" to everything that had happened to the vehicle while he had it.....or....just not be so intent on "getting Top Dollar".

The answer came to me the next time I got in a "Trade". I got in the driver's seat and the owner got in the passenger side. I turned on the engine....revved it up a few times THEN (Cialdini ought to include the following in one of his books)....at the same moment I switched off the ignition I YELLED....VERY LOUDLY....INSIDE....."WHAT WAS THAT NOISE?"

I almost scared the owner "out of his pants"! (I have a BIG Voice)

When he settled down....he proceeded to tell me EVERYTHING that was wrong with the vehicle. One guy even told me his insurance co had Totaled it when it was in a wreck and he and a buddy "fixed it up" to try and sell it on a trade.....even though he had been PAID by his insurance co.

So.....the dealership began making Good Money on Trades and began to pay close attention to "Camouflaged Rich Buyers".

Thanks for letting me bring this up off a "Memory Hook".
