Cemetery $$$
Not to be morbid, but this may tie into cleaning headlights. I've been researching the business of cleaning headstones in cemeteries. If this has been discussed here, forgive me for bringing up an old subject, although I didn't find anything about it in the search feature.
One young man doing this (and has it down to a science) has actually made roughly $28000 during a two month period (May and June). Memorial Day and Flag Day seem to be prime time for this service, even though it can be done a good part of the year, and all year, in some cases. Just wanted to pass this on. Marketing this could be fun, from cemeteries to funeral directors....to ads, all sorts of twistable ideas (to steal a phrase from Phil, sorry Phil). Just wanted to pass this one on. |
Re: Cemetery $$$, twist and turn
Oh my!
But I guess its a valuable service... Where did you hear about this guy? As far as marketing, you couldn't really plaster flyers all over the head stones. At least that would make me do a few turns ,if I was "down there", haha, Eva Sorry, couldn't help myself... |

Re: Cemetery $$$
I love the research help from the master (Phil) and the helpful ideas on a subject nobody seems interested in talking about, which I can't blame them. Don't anybody apologize for adding to the thread. Ideas are what I'm looking for and trying to come up with. I have found out more about Headstone Cleaning in the last 48 hours than I have known existed in my 50 years. Reading the google links from Phil and Don's idea add a lot of possibilities to this niche, which is just a part of life.
Youtube actually has videos of the proper ways to clean certain types of Headstones based on what type of stone it is. Like anything else, there is a right way and wrong way to do things. Eva, funny you should mention ads on the tombstones. While that certainly wouldn't fly, the fella I was talking about actually has people come up to him while he is cleaning a stone and asking if he would clean their loved ones stone. So, not only does he get referrals from is work, he is also getting leads AT the cemetery! Networking at its best. I appreciate all the input. This forum is one of the best. No idea (legit) is off limits. Rick |

Buying and selling cemetery plots for profit...
Quote:
Thanks for sharing this intriguing business idea...! Here's something related, from the archives... Buying and selling unneeded cemetery plots for profit! Often people will buy several plots as a "couple" or a "family." Sometimes, some of these plots are no longer needed, due to divorce, relocation, etc. One guy buys these unneeded cemetery plots, then resells them at a profit... The original post about it is here... http://www.sowpub.com/forum/showthread.php?p=9249 Best wishes, Dien |
Re: Cemetery $$$ Research
As far as plastering flyers, how else can you market yourself? Only research on what is being done TODAY will guide you in the right direction. And WHO is doing the headstone cleaning today? I would say, go talk to the church to find out. My experience with death and funerals are very limited but when a person is to be buried, do the family get some kind of "kit" from the church?
What about the funeral parlor? Do they give out a (marketing) kit? I know, saying marketing is prob not appropriate but can't find the right word. Anything given out by either that is in PRINT, could you as a "Headstone Cleaner Extraordinaire" include a brochure or business card? Do the church have its own newsletter that they mail out on a regular basis? Is there advertising in there? If not, would the church let you leave your card or brochure in the foyer/office/gathering hall/whatever? If the church has no marketing material to speak of, maybe create a one page flyer with other non-competing advertisers on it and a free ad for the church promoting one of their "classes"? Now, cleaning headstones is the last thing in the world I would chose to do but I do consider it an honorable thing to do. Everybody, including the dead, deserves a clean environment, lol. What about the flowers that relatives go there to honor the dead? The family grave might be in California but now all the relatives are spread out all over the states or even the world. Would relatives be interested in you providing a service, having flowers placed on their relatives grave? If they are, place the flowers, take a few pictures of it and the surroundings, if there was a way to incorporate a date the pictures where taken for proof, make a video slide show of the whole thing or just email them some nice photos, I'm sure you could incorporate other components as well. Well, maybe too time-consuming and where do you get the flowers? Anyhow, just thinking out loud... Hope you get something out of it, Eva |
Re: Cemetery $$$
It's amazing the amount of opportunities available in just one niche, which expands with more research.
Dien, I wasn't even aware of the cemetery plot selling angle. After all, it is real estate. interesting. Like Don was mentioning about his friend back in the 80's, I am currently staring down the barrell of a layoff. Been with local gov't for almost 22 years, but I can see the end coming soon. I don't look at it like the end to something, but being layed off would actually afford me time to do just about anything I choose, based on ideas from a site like sowpub. My wife and I would work a business like Headstone cleaning together, and build it up over time. After all, what's not to like about it AND all the other angles that could be developed with it. I don't see anything wrong with working outdoors at your own pace and in control of how much you can make. Not only that, but you wouldn't need to put up with water cooler gossip and back stabbing office politics and waiting for your time off request form to be "Approved" for a day or week off. There would be none of that in the cemetery! Nobody giving you any grief! Thanks again everyone! I'll post again with my results. |
My sister in law did this. She would still be doing, yet...
...she got into a TAX problem, cause she was Toopid...but..,
she did good money... How did she advertise? Local paper, bought a classified for a year. Used her cc, so she had monthly payments. Also, she had TWO signs made, like real estate signs...paid two people, one on each side of the street, both right before the cemetery entrance... Graves Cleaned And Flowers Placed By Rose 333-928-78xx A website to post pics would be a good way to show fulfillment. I'm sure some of you will find ways to complicate this very simple money maker, just from what I'm reading. She did ONE cemetery mostly, after a few months, she got calls from people who had loved ones in other cemeteries too. She did it for a few YEARS. gjabiz Quote:

Fly Low and Get YOUR Dough... on KINDLE.
Hey Phil,
You wiretapping me? Cuz, My NEW version, Fly Low Collect YOUR Dough is one of my new KINDLE titles. I no longer own most of the work I've done in the past...excepting SQ1 and New stuff. But things have changed and ARE changing as we rush headlong into a Cashless society. Coming soon. Thank god for bitcoins, eh? Not sure if Kindle is the answer for me, however, worth a try...and NEW updated information in a more condensed and less Gordon format, seems to be one way for me to go. Thanks for the reminder. Re: Cemetery $$$
This is interesting. My son has a degree and has had a hard time getting a job in the financial industry.
How much do you think people would pay for this? $45.00? It would be easy enough to put up a simple website and have a couple of upsells, such as regular flower delivery, periodic cleaning (like a maintenance contract) This is good stuff. |
Re: Cemetery $$$
I spoke (wrote?) way too soon.
Looking at some of those large headstones would require a lot of work, especially if you were to not only clean them but use a sealant of some type to keep them looking good. Could be a couple hundred $$$$ per stone for the big ones. The gigantic monuments would be even more. Hmmmmm...... |
Re: Cemetery $$$
Hi Djam,
I have found out that the smaller stones can go from $65.00 - $85.00 to clean. The larger ones anywhere from $175.00 - $250.00, since some can be really large monumnets. I've decided to concentrate only on Granite and Marble stones. The Limestone are old and can be easily damaged, so, no can do. I have decided to also offer Graveside Maitenence (cleaning around the stones and flower/ornament delivery. We'll see how it goes and I'll post here to let people know. If your interested in headstone cleaning just google Kendrick Lester Headstone Cleaning Guide. He's a young man in Idaho that has this down to a science and has shared his experiences. All the best, Rick |
