Our web host has informed me that our website (as well as others) has been under "attack" since the weekend...

I presume he means DDoS attacks (Distributed Denial of Service attacks). That's when bad people get lots of computers to load up your website repeatedly, to overwhelm the servers. It's harmless for the users, it just means it's hard to load up the website.

Our web host has been doing what they can - so when it goes down, we keep coming back up, too...

Of course. Many web hosting companies are coming under attack, it is election season. THEY have had years to infiltrate the larger companies, and like Manchurian Candidates, they are being activated. THEY are also inside the power grid...so when the AUGUST brownouts, maybe even Metro BLACK OUTS happen, don't say it wasn't foretold.

As the Summer burns on, we're going to see THEM in action.
