Default Getting Noticed

For many years I used my skill as a performer and magician to create fun situations and develop relationships.

Often it was just doing a simple magic trick or saying something off-beat to grab attention.

I've noticed that in business situations or chamber of commerce meetings or BNI meetings, you can't just do a trick willy-nilly... however, I have often done tricks to make a point. Once, I created a special trick for a famous sports figure that so pleased him , that he gave me his personal phone number !

The point I want to make is that these days, you've got to do something that gets you noticed ! I don't believe that it has to be right-in-your-face though.

I often used the old technique of sending a framed, in-glass, newspaper article of a prospect being awarded a prize by the governor or president, along with a picture in the article. It ALWAYS made an impact.

Giving away little gifts wherever you are helps smooth the way.

This is why I like Glenn Osborn's tipping strategy. It is something that gets attention, yet is also subtle. Giving a tip through out the meal via lotto tickets, cash, sunglasses, or whatever makes a person stand out.

The bottom-line in my mind is to make the person feel better because they interacted with you ! The book, The Golden Rule of Schmoozing, by Aye Jaye expresses this very well. This book is a guidebook on treating others well.

Getting back to Glenn's tipping strategy, I think it works so well because it is simple, has a high degree of impact, and almost anyone can do it. If ya gotta eat, you might as well go out, have fun, and see how many people will come up to you wanting to know who you are at the meal. Why not make a game out of it and see how many times you can go out to eat and have someone want to talk with you !

Even if you don't do it for business, do it to have some fun !

Lightbulb Thanks for sharing the magic, Millard

Love the practical tips you shared

To quote the kids today, you got mad skills! That's probably why the athlete was blown away

A few questions though:

1. Is the framed article a real one or just a mock-up using the newspaper's logo? Is this only for prospects who have received actual awards?

2. Please which specific tipping strategy of Glenn are you referring to?

Thanks again

Default What I Did

Thanks for the question.

I made a fake article and framed it. It was usually about a traffic jam or crowd rush or super sale because a business took advantage of some event that was purely false.

Why not ask Glenn or go to his site, www.tippinggold.com to find out what strategies worked the best.

I first started to do unusual things to get noticed by businesses after talking to a famous entertainer in Chicago. If you just watch the entertainment industry, you'll see examples, over and over again that can be used by day-to-day businesses to get attention.

It's really simple, when. you think about it.
