![]() ... your local Borders bookstore.
Last night my wife and I went on a date. We went to eat first and then we went to Borders afterwards which we sometimes do. I headed straight for the bargain shelves which I usually do. I've found some real gems in there at steal prices in the past. Didn't find anything this time but I saw a couple that I considered buying for Dien. Only problem was with the shipping to Australia. He could buy them cheaper over there. *g* The titles? 1. "The Seventh Texas Symposium on Relativistic Astrophysics." 2. "Mass Densities in High Speed Astrophysics." (I'm not sure I have that one quite right but it's close.) So who says you can't find brainiac titles at your local bookstore? *g* Rick Smith, "The Net Guerrilla" Click Here To See How Guerrilla Product Developers Use *Their* Brains |

![]() Hi Rick!
Wow, that's some real brain food there.... :) We have Borders here in Australia now too (which is great, but it's increased my wallet-drain substantially, since I'm such a book-addict!). :) Just a couple of weeks ago they had some incredible items on special at Borders here, books for only A$2 (about US$1 ) each! I got a copy of.... would you believe.... "Building a Mail Order Business" by William A. Cohen. This is a fat 571-page book on mail order! (I already had a copy, but I figured for US$1, I'd get another and decide what to do with it later.... :) ) I also got some other good business-related books too.... Now.... finding the time to read all these.... That's the next challenge!!! I've also been looking at my copy of "7 Steps to Freedom II" (by Benjamin Suarez) lately too.... I think among the various books on mail order I have, this is the most comprehensive. I've found some good information in there I couldn't find anywhere else. But I've also found having several books by different authors tends to complement each other, since everyone does it slightly differently.... I also recently got a lot of original back issues of the Gary Halbert Letter, which are fantastic! It's going to take me a while to read them all.... :) (As you know, you can also check out a whole bunch of them at www.thegaryhalbertletter.com ....) Which leads me to ask.... Which books on mail order / direct response do you like the best? (I have plenty of them, but it'd be interesting to know what everyone thinks....) Oh, and also, how about videos? With my GHL order I also got a free video, which is from some "Direct Mail Bootcamp" I think with Bill Myers, Ted Nicholas, Gary Halbert, and other marketers.... I'm new to watching "marketing videos" -- are there any which are "must sees" ? - Dien |

> decide what to do with it later.... :) ) I used to use extras like this for contest give aways for my e-zine. So we'd have a contest to see who could get the most new subscribers in a month and the winner would get a free copy of whatever extras I had hanging around. Worked great! (Give you any ideas? *g*) > I've also been looking at my copy of "7 > Steps to Freedom II" (by Benjamin > Suarez) lately too.... (I have plenty of them, but it'd be > interesting to know what everyone > thinks....) Ooooh! Well, "7 Steps" is right up there. I think *my* favorite would *have* to be "How to Write A Good Advertisement" by Victor Schwab. My copy is *full* of highlighted pages. I have used it for a number of marketing projects. It's not just theory. There's plenty of "how to" in it. I'm getting very tired of all these books that are long on theory and short on "how to." For example, one book that seems to be the darling of a lot of folks is Jack Trout's latest, "Differentiate or Die." So I took a look at it at Borders. I thought I was going to buy it. Then I started looking through it in detail. Want the gist? The title says it. Oh sure he goes through a bunch of case studies to prove the point. But I couldn't find any examples where he told in *detail* what the steps they took to differentiate company A from company B. So. We know we have to differentiate. The question is how. Trout never answered it for me. I can tell IFF will be much better in that regard. While not "marketing" per se, I'm thoroughly impressed with Paul Hartunian's publicity course. I just received it a couple of months ago. It's *excellent*. Worth every penny. And I get nothing for that recommendation. > Oh, and also, how about videos? Bill Myers Product Development series. (No longer available from Bill but stay tuned...) 2. Ted Nicholas' self-publishing series. 3. Several of the seminar videos from the last seminar Ted Thomas and Dave Bancroft did together; Dan Poynter, Paul Hartunian, there are a couple more. These used to be available from Dave but he sold his company awhile back and I can't remember the name of the company. BTW, Paul's segments are *not* on publicity. One was on speaking for $5,000 a day and the other details how he runs his publicity business from home. Absolutely excellent. I haven't read through it all yet, but I agree, it's a terrific book so far! I think there's a lot to be learned from the "old masters".... > Ask Gordon if I have any marketing videos. > *g* Here are some of the best IMO (not in > any particular order) > 1. Bill Myers Product Development series. > (No longer available from Bill but stay > tuned...) Sounds good.... I don't have as much of Bill Myers' stuff as I'd like.... > 2. Ted Nicholas' self-publishing series. Ted Nicholas appeared in the "episode" of the "Direct Mail Bootcamp" video I saw. It was cool seeing many of these guys (Ted Nicholas, Bill Myers, Gary Halbert) speaking.... Thanks for the recommendation, Rick! > 3. Absolutely excellent. Thanks.... I'll keep an eye out for this.... I probably won't be buying any videos in the near future (I have a whole stack of Gary Halbert Letters to get through, plus I'm starting to really intensively study "7 Steps to Freedom II"), but I expect I'll get some eventually, and now I'll know what to look out for.... :) One of the best places to get this kind of stuff seems to be ebay.... Especially for marketing reports, videos etc. that are "out of print." - Dien Rice |

I don't have as much of Bill > Myers' stuff as I'd like.... In addition to the videos I mentioned, get both volumes of the "Unfair Advantage Letter Books." Also get the letters on disk if you can. Some of the offers come that way. I got my copies in a "trade" deal because I already had the bonus that was offered with a product I bought. I used a letter Pat McAllister wrote as the basis for my "seminar that never was." *g* (The letter was in the book. The letter sold but the problem was the fact that I didn't start promoting as early as I should have for several reasons.) Like most classics, the principles used in the book are timeless. > Ted Nicholas appeared in the > "episode" of the "Direct Mail > Bootcamp" video I saw. It was cool > seeing many of these guys (Ted Nicholas, > Bill Myers, Gary Halbert) speaking.... You'll find that a lot of those guys and gals "show up" on the videos. Sometimes they're there as speakers, sometimes not. > One of the best places to get this kind of > stuff seems to be ebay.... Especially for > marketing reports, videos etc. that are > "out of print." I haven't had much luck with this on eBay. What search terms do you use or what sections do you check out? One time I found where one guy was selling several hundred dollars worth on one of the Buy and Sell forums. The price? $50 US plus S/H. I think it cost me $57.00 US or something like that. The cool part was that most of it was stuff I didn't have. *g* Rick Smith, "The Net Guerrilla" The New Home For Product Developers |
