Default Marketing - POP-UPS

I just recently read about using POP-UP messages, when a person leaves your site, to sign up for a variety of newsletters. This is a free program that promises that your newsletter sign up will be posted on some 15 other sites as a pop-up, with other newsletetrs of course. I think that it is an annoyance for people, but, many people are claiming that it can bring you a great deal of new subscribers, even if you only do it for a while. One site that offers this program is : http://personalizedpartyfavor.com/freenocatch.htm

Has anyone tried this program and does it really work ?

Thank you.

Because so many web sites are doing this, I have recently had to install a program that kills pop-ups as they are posted. (Pop-up Stopper by Panicware, a free utility from Download.com)

I think pop-ups produce about as much good karma as spam email. The bad feelings you produce would, in my opinion, outweigh any sales benefits.

Default I did the same thing

I now surf with popups turned off and am not planning on using them on my sites. They *can* kill your clients' browsers (resource overload) and I don't want my clients to feel pressured to come and buy. My website is simply a support for my offline business... not my business' reason for existance.

Hi Ken,

My personal feelings agree with John Raabe.... I tend to find pop-ups annoying. I don't use any pop-ups at present, BUT if I did, I would definitely make sure that the same pop-up doesn't repeatedly pop-up for the same visitor.... For example, you can use javascript code (using cookies) to ensure that the same pop-up doesn't keep repeatedly popping up for the same visitor (which can be very annoying)....

Here's an example of what I mean.... The pop-up only occurs when you LEAVE the site the first time.... then after that, it won't appear again.

(There are probably many other examples around.)
