Where I can get information on how many copies a particular book may have sold?

I was thinking that this could be useful information in trying to estimate the size of a particular target market you'd like to reach....

For example, if you'd like to reach people who love Great Danes (a breed of dog), you might be able to estimate the potential size of this market by the sales of mainstream books about Great Danes.

Of course, this kind of info might be difficult to find (short of mailing lists from the SRDS or other direct mail sources similar to that) - I don't know....

Amazon.com has ranking numbers that tell you how well particular books sell at Amazon in comparison with all their other books. This doesn't give you absolute numbers, but if you consistently see numbers like 600,000, that's bad news.

Also, SRDS gives you very precise circulation figures for magazines, in some cases even audited figures. This can be extremely useful for such research.

Try the bestseller lists at Publisher's Weekly (http://publishersweekly.com), New York Times, USA Today etc.

However, as to ACTUAL figures per book, publishers guard these closely. Best of luck if you're an author trying to figure out how many they actually sold. (I think a popular romance publisher is currently involved in a class action suit with some of its authors because the authors maintain the sales figures on the royalty sheets were... ah, creative, shall we say.)

Great Dane breeders would know. Email a few breeders, you'll find them online.

Ditto for any other niche market. Ask the people involved. ;-)
