A major secret of success

Sometimes, you just can't get enough information. I don't know about you - for me, it's like an addiction.

I go to the local bookstore, and start looking through books. These are not just books to me - these are doorways to future possibilities. Treasure-troves of fascinating facts about our world. Or amazing truths just waiting to be discovered.

Visiting bookstores can be an expensive hobby. If I just browsed, it wouldn't cost much - but usually I can't help buying SOMETHING! I'm convinced I could keep the local bookshop in business with my purchases alone! (Okay, that's an exaggeration - but not much of one.)

Someone visited my house recently - they said, it's like a bookstore in here - because of all the shelves of books. (I didn't show him the books in boxes in the garage, that I just don't have shelf space for!)

I've noticed that many successful people are information-hungry. They want to know all they can about their chosen subject, and just can't get enough of it. I think if you have this kind of attitude, you can't help but succeed eventually. It may not happen immediately - but reading will give you ideas. And as you try those ideas out, you'll find out what works and what doesn't.

You can't believe everything that's in print, of course. In my readings, I've read a lot of crap (pardon the expression). However, it's only by going out there and letting your curiosity take the lead that you can sift through the coal to find the diamonds!

There.... This was just a little tribute to reading. If you want to succeed - let your curiosity take the lead and read a book!

For years I have wanted my own library. Not just bookshelves, but a whole room, where I could sit and read, dream and be surrounded by books. So at the moment I am ripping walls out, altering the whole fabric of my house to get my very own library.
My collection is varied and eclectic; from hippy stuff to microcontroller reference books. Engineering, optics, chemistry, new age, motivational, marketing, NLP, woodwork, horology to foundry work to electrical engineering. And then theres the fiction....
I could start a book shop, but then I would have to part with my treasures.

"Horology", huh? I actually had to look that one up. ;^]

I envy you, Garry. I ran out of room for my books long ago and have resorted to stacking them (most in boxes) in the corner of my kitchen and in front of the bookcases in my bedroom.

This might be a good time to find out what the rest of the SowPubbers are currently reading and what's on their shelves, just for curiosity's sake. How 'bout it, folks? You can just mention general categories, but examples are always good. And we can keep it to non-fiction, for now.

Oh, alright, I'll go first.

Not surprisingly, I get a lot of books on business and entrepreneurship, especially in the various areas of marketing. Recently finished Jay Abraham's "Getting Everything You Can Out of All You've Got" (highly recommended). I'm currently going thru Mark G. Nolan's "The Instant Marketing Plan" and Jeff & Marc Slutsky's "StreetSmart Marketing". Also started "Nothing Down for the 90's" (a little late, I know) by Robert G. Allen. Next on the plate are books by Hopkins, Reeves, Caples, Levinson, Rapp & Collins, Trout & Ries, among others.

I have strong interests in science, theology, and how the two relate. In the science arena, I recently acquired a few books by the late physicist Richard P. Feynman (e.g., "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!" and "The Pleasure of Finding Things Out") and by researcher/author Clifford A. Pickover (e.g., "Surfing Through Hyperspace"). Also got "Mission to Abisko" by Casti & Karlqvist, and I still haven't gotten around to reading Hawking's "A Brief History of Time". Not sure when I'll get time to read 'em, but I'm looking forward to it.

In the theology department, I'm reading "Introducing Christian Doctrine" by Millard J. Erickson (highly recommended) and "A Non-Churchgoer's Guide to the Bible" by Michael Gantt. Also started "True for You, But Not for Me" by Paul Copan and "Four Views on the Book of Revelation" by C. Marvin Pate, et al. Lots more queued up...

The comparing/contrasting/harmonizing of science with theology usually focusses on the whole "Origins" issue. Well, actually it's several related topics -- origins & age of the Universe, origins & age of the Earth, origins of Life, origins of Man, the veracity & extent of the Genesis Flood. For this, one really needs to read books and articles from all different "camps", as it were, in order to get a fuller understanding of all the issues and where all parties are "coming from". So, I've got (and have read/heard) works by all varieties of young-Earth creationists, old-Earth creationists (the view I hold to), theistic evolutionists, atheistic & non-theistic evolutionists (Darwinian and otherwise), and everything in between.

In particular, not long ago I read (the excellent) "The Genesis Question" by Dr. Hugh Ross (astrophysicist/pastor & head of the 'Reasons to Believe' org.; old-Earth/Progressive Creationist) and "Refuting Evolution" by Dr. Jonathan Sarfati (physical chemist/chess-champion and an Aussie/Kiwi; young-Earth Creationist), as well as "Four Views on Creation and Evolution" by Moreland, et al. I recently picked up "Rare Earth" by Ward & Brownlee, "The Birth of Time" by John Gribbin, "Origins: A Skeptic's Guide to the Creation of Life on Earth" by Robert Shapiro, "The Seven Daughters of Eve" by Bryan Sykes, "Noah's Flood" by Ryan & Pitman, "Not By Chance" by Lee Spetner, and several others.

As for miscellaneous stuff, I've got the original "Chicken Soup for the Soul" by Canfield & Hansen, "DO IT!: Let's Get Off Our Buts" by McWilliams & McWilliams, "Story" by Robert McKee (for when I write that great American novel...), "The Modern Identity Changer" (for when I need to "disappear"), "Letters of C.S. Lewis", "I Am Spock" by Leonard Nimoy, "Rule by Secrecy" and "Crossfire" by Jim Marrs, "Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton" by Edward Rice, "Psycho-Cybernetics" by Dr. Maxwell Maltz, "Lies My Teacher Told Me" by James W. Loewen, "The Mammoth Book of Unsolved Crimes" ed. by Roger Wilkes, "Elvis and Me" by Presley & Harmon, and... well, that's enough.

And that's just the non-fiction, though I think I've touched on my fiction interests in previous posts. That's a pretty good glimpse into my reading interests, and probably more than anyone cared to know. 8^>

I may look into a few of those titles. I'm always looking for a place to stand in that tender balance between science and theology (beginning philosophy buff - but not the supercynical kind, the good open kind). I think coming from a place of accepting the fact that I don't know and being ok with that and still searching is about the best stance I can do right now.

I just went through the Slutsky books myself. Liked Street Smart Marketing. Didn’t think the others were as good. No reason not to check em out anyway though. Maybe you’ll be able to get more from them than I have.

I’ve heard Feynman recommended before wholeheartedly. I’ll add those books to my list.

Do you like Mark Nolan’s book? I haven’t read it.

Ok, here you go. It's a mish mash. Some from personal recommendations. Some from browsing titles at Amazon.com. Some chosen for title alone. Some based on online recommendations and reviews.

Lots of junk. Lots of bunk. And lots of slam dunk.

I'll be getting most of these books through interlibrary loan to check out. I send them batches every couple of days.

No I don't read them all. Half are just scanned if I don't think they're worth the time to read. It's the good ones I end up finding that makes it worth being the weird guy who always has interlibrary loan books to pick up.

To borrow a phrase, "Holy Crap!!" (No, I didn't learn that one in any theology books.)

I noticed several from Adam Smith and several from Abraham Maslow. Are you taking courses or otherwise heavily interested in Economics and Psychology? (Forgive me if you already mentioned this.) As I recall, Macro-Economics was one of my tougher (and least-liked) courses my sophomore year, but that was largely because of the professor. Micro-Econ was much more enjoyable, but, then, I got to tutor a hot (but spoken for) chick. I think I liked what little I had of Maslow my freshman year (still remember the hierarchy), but I don't know if I could read all those books! ;->

I found a few more on this list that I have (e.g., by Covey, Wilde, Ayan, Cremo & Thompson) and a few others to add to my list.

Couldn't find the James Bond books, but I did come across one you might like -- "The Action Hero's Handbook: How to Catch a Great White Shark, Perform the Jedi Mind Trick, Track a Fugitive, and Dozens of Other TV and Movie Skills" by Borgenicht & Borgenicht. Sounds like a lot of fun!

BTW, I know I've seen Wattles' "The Science of Getting Rich" for free online, but I just can't remember where. If I do, I'll let you know.

Regarding one of the Bob Morrison books, “Gambler’s Gold” -- are you sure it isn't "Promoter's Gold"? Or are there two of them?

Incidentally, although I never finished it myself, I would also recommend Robert G. Allen's "Multiple Streams of Income".

Drawing Ian Sidaway. More ambitious. I'm not ready for this yet.
Technical:

The complete modern blacksmith, Alexander G. Weygers. Great if you like metal pounding. A fav. of my mine.

The Video Makers Handbook Roland Lewis. A bit simplistic, good section on interviews.

The Encyclopedia of Sewing Techniques by Jan Eaton. Hey, single dads can so sew.

Controlling the World with your PC. Paul Bergsman. Reference on another project. Good book, some suspect code examples.

The Antigravity Handbook. D. Hatcher Childress. What can I say? Wait till my antigravity boots hit the market.

Okay, I guess you guys convinced me - I'll jump in here too!

Well.... It would be a long exercise to type in what's on my bookshelves, but here's what I've been reading lately....

I've been quite "advertising"-focused lately - so I've been collecting (and reading) a whole bunch of ads (both from what's in print, and from the web), and reading books about advertising too....

A book I found in the library is "The 100 Greatest Advertisements" by Julian Lewis Watkins. Not a bad book! The ads only go up to about 1959 though (when the Dover edition was published) - but there are some classics here. Ads like David Ogilvy's Rolls Royce ad ("At 60 miles an hour the loudest noise in this new Rolls-Royce comes from the electric clock"), that John Caples piano playing ad ("They Laughed When I Sat Down At the Piano - But When I Started To Play!-"), and others in here too - plus the stories behind them!

An early Marlboro Man ad is in here - ever wonder how the Marlboro Man came to be? Well, the story goes that filtered cigarettes were considered quite effeminate. So, in order to remove the "stigma" of "effeminate" filters on cigarettes, the ad agency picked the most masculine image they could think of - a cowboy! And lo and behold, the Marlboro Man was born. I wish I knew a more modern version of this book!

I've also recently been reading "The Wizard of Ads" by Roy H. Williams, and leafing through "Marketing Outrageously" by Jon Spoelstra. Still reading through "The Secrets of Word-of-Mouth Marketing" by George Silverman, and "Jump Start Your Brain" by Doug Hall.

Richard Feynman has been mentioned a couple of times - his book of anecdotes, "Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman" is a great read, and I think everyone would enjoy it (not just physicists)! I pick it and read through his stories from time to time, just for the laughs!

I too, love advertising and marketing materials Dien. I saw somewhere that Jay Abraham read and reread, "Scientific Advertising" over 50 times.

"The Magic of Thinking Big" was first published in 1959 but as you read the pages the authors material is as pertinent and practical today as in 1959.

Thanks for your "Great Ideas Letter" it really makes you think.
