Default Browser will not open "Target = New" Links

This is very irritating. I uninstalled some spam ware from my computer and in the process it looks like it screwed up some settings somewhere and now when I click on a "target = new" html link (or right click and choose "open in a new window") nothing happens. I have tried reinstalling IE and it still doesn't work.

Any ideas?

Default Instead of Target=New the correcet code is

target="_blank"

target=new may work, sometimes, but only because the browser doesn't really know what to do and so opens a new window.

If the code is correct (target="_blank") then check out your scripting options. (Tools/Internet Options)

Other items that sometimes screw up browsing are Active X and unwanted (bad) items in the IE Temp folder.

Thanks Michael, but that doesn't really help my problem. When I click on a link somewhere I have no way of changing their html code. Most people use target = "new" and I am not even sure if using target="_blank" would solve the problem. Like Michael Mayhew said below, it sounds like a missing dll.

I know how irritating this is. I just had this happen after uninstalling something. I have looked & looked but I have lost the notes I took that helped me take care of this. Only after trying to install a few programs did the warning pop up. It is one (.dll )file that is missing that is causing this. Hopefully someone will be able to tell you which .dll file it is. If I find it I will tell you. It drove me nuts for 2 weeks or so.

Thanks Michael, that sounds right. I reinstalled the spamware and it works now. I would still like to get the dll file name if you ever find it because I hate having this crap on my computer.

This is a case of sloppy programming where the uninstall routine is removing a shared component. The programmer should be shot for even writing this piece of junk.

James,
Try uninstalling again and if it asks to delete files in the windows or windows/system directory say no. Do not click the "yes to all" button. It may take longer to uninstall as it will ask you if you want to delete for each file but who knows? It might work!

Have you tried removing the spyware with Lavasoft Ad Aware? You can get it, free or small fee, from http://www.lavasoftusa.com or email them at [email protected]

It's usually possible to leave the program intact and just remove the spyware with Ad Aware. I wouldn't be without this great little program. They just released Version 6 in the Plus and Pro versions and it's great. Highly recommended.

Yes I have AdAware but it would not remove it.

What is the name of the spyware you are trying to remove, James? What program is it in so the rest of us can avoid it, if you don't mind sharing?

Sounds like it might be Web3000 or Cydoor. Web3000 is a real problem because it changes things in WinSock and deletes needed shared resources when it is removed. Even Ad Aware cannot delete and clean it completely but the program usually tells you this. I understand the newest version can handle it most of the time but I haven't had to try, thank heavens! You might like to update your Ad Aware and give that a try.

I had problems once with an incomplete Cydoor removal after the program it was attached to was removed. I contacted Cydoor support for help but nothing they suggested worked either and I ended up having to reformat because it would not allow me to do anything.

IMHO spyware should be totally outlawed and the law should eliminate the loophole that says, if it's part of the program, they don't have to tell you before puchase. If it's an add-on they must tell you on the box. Stupid lawmakers can't even do their job right when they do finally try.

Good luck, James.
