Wanted: utility that will permit sort & see...

I'm looking for a small utility program that will allow me to sort into piles on my desktop but still be able to see a list of what's in each pile as I go. It gets to be a real hassle trying to sort things out and having to open each file time and again and again, especially when you have a lot of sorting to do.

I currently have folders but when I open one, others close and it's a pain. I probably can't see the solution right before my eyes...I'm still in a fog. Any help appreciated. Thanks!
