P.S. Last week, some guy who was high on drugs...broke into a house in my area at 2am. He was greeted by a "Deer Rifle" bullet that stopped him from ever breaking into someone's home again. On the SAME DAY...Just ONE Vote from our Supreme Court allowed that to happen. 4 other Justices voted against this Homeowner being allowed to "defend his home with a WEAPON".

It's just a matter of time before the "Socialists" get their way. The TIME to Stand Up against this onslaught is NOW!

Thanks for your passionate plea.

Unfortunately, whatever Action you take will be a complete and utter waste of Your time.

How many people Protested going into Afghanistan and Iraq? Still went in, right?

If you want to get something off your chest, then feel free to write to your congressman or the newspaper or whomever you like. But don't expect it to amount to anything.

Goverments - All Goverments - fear a free and armed citizenry. They are too dang hard to Control. But, steal the fruits of their labor (tax) and devalue what's left (inflation - which is caused by governments) and they have a Tool to make a person less free. Which just leaves the firearms.

Back when Australia had some nutjob who shot some people and the Govt did the usual knee-jerk reaction, we Lost (had stolen from us) the ability to own certain firearms - semi-autos of Any caliber (including 22s) and pump-action shotguns with a capacity of more than 2 to name two types. And no longer was Self Protection a Legitimate Reason to own a firearm.

Even Politicians that said they disagreed with the new Federal Laws still voted for them - despite their constituents voicing otherwise. But the Fed govt said... States still had the final say, as long as it was the Federal line.

And despite all the evidence to the contrary, the Govt/Media alliance still Claimed all kinds of firearm violence from firearm license holders with lawfully obtained firearms - not non-license holders using firearms which have no record of entering the country.

But, the move backfired. Because, most people who were Mugged by the Govt (forced to hand in their now illegal firearms under threat of jail), took the money they received and purchased replacement firearms + additional firearms. Result = more firearms in the community and not less.

The head trainer at my local gun club - and the gun smith the local police turn to to destroy confiscated firearms, as well as Counsel to the State Govt who is slowly changing the laws in our state back in our favor - said the police figures showed 40,000 New firearm owners Each Year.

Of course, we are Not allowed to own Tasers, stun guns or pepper spray.

But it could be worse... we could be England. Where home owners who Defend themselves find themselves being charged with a crime - even if they detained a burglar with a replica (look a like, but cannot fire) firearm.

You're both right and both wrong and here's why.

Take a look at the political history of the good ol' USA and you'll see that traditionally the Democrats get us out of bad times by spending us into even more debt and disaster, which pleases the people temporarily. Why? Because they get the roads fixed, the tax burdens shifted more comfortably for them, the inflation comes down and jobs are plentiful.

THEN comes the reckoning, when the spend-happy Democrats bring on increasing problems for the population, we get involved in too many headaches on a national and international scale that is brought home agonizingly painfully. So, they vote in the Republicans to tighten things up, and change things to a more sensible spending level and so on.

You will note that things currently look more like the Democratic ways in spite of having a Republican head of the country. The reason is that the stupid people tied the hands of the Republican party by voting in a Democratic congress--which essentially nullified the objective in getting Republicans in for the clean up job. The mess this country is in right now is due largely to the fact that we have a government, voted in by people who couldn't make up their wishy-washy minds, that is split and works against itself (when it works).

Better times are coming but it'll be a painful adjustment. It won't be Obama or McCain who changes things but the people who are somewhat united behind a single candidate and party...to a large degree...regardless of who wins or loses the election.

We've seen this before folks, if you know your political history, and we'll see it again. Nothing new on that front. As for developments that ARE new, well, that's for another time.

Michael is right. Your voice will not be heard. And pollution is the culprit. The pollution of democracy caused by the constant flood of money that gushes in to control the political process. Resulting in government of, by, and for, whoever writes the biggest check. There are thousands of drilled, capped wells around the country that are very capable of cranking out millions of barrels of oil each and every day of the week.

1) Uncap the wells.

As I mentioned in a previous post... Australia has Many capped oil wells around the country and exports oil to 40+ countries. YET, we pay prices for oil as dictated by Opec.

This will NOT change because... the Govt gets too much tax money from the high fuel prices. And they aren't going to shoot that Golden Goose.

For the US's sake... oil business is conducted in $US. Now, it is Rumored that Iraq was making the move to do oil business in Euros. Which would have cost the US Bankers many millions in dollars. Insert conspiracy theory here.

Now I have mentioned previously, the state of my State's - and Australia's - firearm laws. And how Self Defense is not considered a Valid Reason to own a firearm.

Other writers have written on how Trigger Locks can Cost Lives - as the firearm is not At Hand and life could be lost before the Trigger Lock is removed.

Obviously, if Self Defense were a Reason, then laws could not be passed to Ensure how firearms are stored - which would make them useless as self defense.

But it isn't just firearms our State doesn't like.

As I mentioned, Tasers are out. A quick check also shows... personal alarms are also out. As are any knives which can be opened with one hand (not counting box cutters, of course, as they are readily available). Knives are also not allowed to be carried in public unless you have a Valid reason - such as you are a tradesman carrying a bag of tools. Self Defense is Not a Valid Reason.

In essence, nothing can be carried on the person for Self Defense reasons. Of course, that only Law Abiding citizens would follow such Laws seems not to register in the brains of the Politicians or their Politics (Poly means many and Tics are blood sucking insects).

Batons are also not allowed.

In our City, the media has been getting Mileage from what they call a Bikeway Predator committing Sex Attacks on Bikeways (Sex Attack not necessarily being an attempt at rape). I agree with you that the government has an incentive to promote high prices, since they get more tax dollars as a result. (This is true of everything with a sales tax or a GST [goods and services tax] put on top, since the higher the price, the more revenue the government gets - as long as sales volume doesn't decrease significantly.)

However, I think the main reason Aussies pay the same amount for oil that others do is because of the free market. Oil producers are private companies, and if Aussies won't pay the same prices, they'll ship the oil overseas. The only way for Aussies to pay less than everyone else is if the government subsidized the price of oil - I think a few countries actually do this. Alternatively, the government could restrict the export of oil. But with a free market, Aussies would pay the same as everyone else.

Having said that, I think Aussies actually pay more, because I think the tax on fuel in Australia is higher than in many other places. Though I could be wrong about that...

However, I think you bring up an important point. If people are rewarded for something, they'll do more of it. The government is "rewarded" for higher prices by having a sales tax/GST. So, it follows, that they'll "encourage" higher prices. Higher prices = higher tax revenues = more money for them to spend.

The same goes for what I've heard of many US government contracts with companies like Halliburton and KBR in Iraq. Many of these contracts are apparently paid as "cost plus percentage". So, let's say they get paid cost plus 50% (I have no idea what the figures are, this is just for illustration). If they can build a hospital for $10 million, they'd make $5 million. BUT... If they can "inflate" the price to $50 million, they'll make $25 million. Which do you think they'll do?

These "cost plus percentage" contracts "reward" them for inflating the costs!

These are all the tax dollars of US citizens which are being siphoned away to these private companies. The "fault" as I see it is with the cost+percentage contracts - since companies are then "rewarded" for inflating costs as much as possible!

Finally, why do politicians accept this? Apparently many politicians - after politics - get jobs with these companies. So, if politicians allow these kinds of things to go on, they are "rewarded" with multi-million-dollar jobs later on. What do they care? It's not their money they're spending.

Okay, my rant is over!

The point is, the "reward" system explains a lot... People will do what they are "rewarded" to do.

I am Against subsidizing. As that is... robbing Peter to pay Paul stuff. And in the case of oil, it is stupid to Tax it and then Subsidize it.

As for the High prices in Aust. They are Justified to the Aust public as... that's the price we have to pay to Import the oil. The problem is... we don't Import the oil people fill up their cars with. We make that ourselves. The only oil we Need to import is stuff for Heavy Machinery. Meaning, the Reasoning they use is False - a Lie!

As for... They will sell it to others at that same price... that doesn't wash. Otherwise, we wouldn't be paying the high prices we pay. We'd be paying Low prices as those in some Arab countries pay... and even prices low like in the USA.

I just did a quick price check of oil prices. In Thailand it was 17 baht a litre and went to 30 baht a litre. 30 Baht is like $1A. The USA pays like the equal of $1.10A per litre. But we are paying $1.50 a litre... and down your end of the country it's closer to $1.60 even getting to $1.69 (Why almost a 20 cent price difference between your state and mine - you are Higher and yet the oil rigs everyone knows about are closer to you? Rhetorical question to get you Thinking.)

We all know the price of gas/petrol is a Con. And there is no Real Competition between oil companies - despite so called Watchdog groups and the like, which are PR exercises so it Looks like the Politicians are doing something.

BTW... for a person to Visit the USA, they have to submit a Thumb Print at the airport and have their photo taken - in the guise of stopping terrorism (what a crock). But now, the US has added another Barrier to entry... at least 3 days notice before booking a flight.

So that night time phone call and next day plane booking to get to the US to close a business deal, or right a deal going wrong... are a thing of the past. Three days notice to fly to the US or no entry.

Like all such Reasoning... how this Stops terrorism isn't said. It's just claimed to.

(Note: $1.50 a litre is around $5.68 a gallon, if I calculated right!)

I just checked... Aussies are taxed "twice" on fuel.

There's a 38 cents a litre "excise tax"... then...

There's the 10% GST. So the government "double-dips" on gas/petrol tax.

So, if you take away the 38 cents, Aussie petrol would be around $1.12 per litre. Then, take away the 10% GST and it would be down to $1.02 cents a litre. So, out of $1.50 per liter price you pay for gas/petrol, around 48 cents is tax.

So I think the massive tax Aussies pay on gas/petrol explains a lot of the super-high costs.

As for the Arab countries, I think many OPEC countries subsidize petrol/gas for their citizens/residents, so their prices are artificially low...

We all know the price of gas/petrol is a Con. And there is no Real Competition between oil companies - despite so called Watchdog groups and the like, which are PR exercises so it Looks like the Politicians are doing something.

I think there are various reasons why the price of oil is so high...

• Increasing demand. China, India, and many other countries are using more than before, so there's more demand for oil worldwide.
• Decreasing supply. This can be due to oil reserves producing less than before, war, etc.
• FEAR of decreasing supply, and hence EXPECTATION of higher prices. This leads speculators to drive the price of oil futures up, expecting to be able to make a profit by selling higher later on. This expectation can be due to the above reasons, plus fear of future wars in oil-producing regions, further limiting supply. From what I've read, this reason seems to be the "BIG ONE" at the moment...
