Friend of the forum, Steve DiMarco, does the introduction to his father's WWII true story. It is compelling reading. It should be a movie. Remember THE GREAT ESCAPE, with Steve McQueen? And DARBY'S RANGERS with James Garner (Maverick) who was also in the Great Escape. And ANZIO with Robert Mitchum and Peter Falk? Well, when the Rangers were captured at Cisterna, they were put on a train and sent to work camps. Four men escaped from the train, one died during the escape and three survived and lived behind enemy lines for months. Steve's father, Angelo DiMarco was one of those men. This is a story of survival, will power and determination. It is a true story. It would make a great movie, so if you want a good read and are any sort of history buff, get a copy of MORE THAN A SOLDIER. LET me know if you do, I'll send you a little gift too. Cisterna was Fubar at the General level, and resulted in 311 killed and over 400 POW. It was pure trap, ambush. And critics say it might have been arrogance, as well as faulty intel which led to this military disaster. Of course, we have the luxury of being critics and arm chair Generals, we don't know what the reasons were for this misuse of these original Special Forces. But, Angelo DiMarco was there, and his first hand account brings this sad piece of military history to life. Sure, we like to see movie stars in the stories; James Garner as Darby, leader of DARBY'S RANGERS. And Steve McQueen of THE GREAT ESCAPE, which is where Angelo would have ended up if he and 3 other Rangers hadn't escaped from the train. ANZIO was told from a reporter's perspective, played by Robert Mitchum, and it touched upon the FUBAR of the invasion. This book and first hand look at what really happened, makes a better movie in your mind, than any on the screen, KUDOS to Steve's cousin for bringing his uncle's story to life. A good story, well told. Hard to find these days. http://amzn.to/2oVQBNR Gordon FUBAR was/is Army slang for: Fu***ed Up Beyond All Recognition |
