Default Text formatting question...Help!

Hello,

I have a question for some of you who may have
run into this situation before.

I am trying to set up some autoresponders.
But the email keeps coming out double-spaced.

I am formatting the content using Notepad with
a hard return at sixty characters to limit the
line length. The original I load into the
autoresponder is single-spaced. But when I hit
the autoresponder, it responds with a double-spaced email.

I tried formatting it with Wordpad but the same
thing happens.

Anyone have any ideas how to cure the problem?

You can try Format-It. It's free and easy to use.

Default For a manual line break, try this

Hi, John --

When you get to the end of the line, instead of hitting just the ENTER key, hold the SHIFT key down while you press the ENTER key. This will give you a manual line break without beginning a new paragraph (I believe this is what's happening when you hit the ENTER key by itself).

Hope this works!

Default Have you tried using standard html code?

Instead of using the enter key try runon sentences with [br] where you want the lines to break. It will look like one huge paragraph, but the lines should print with the breaks where you want them to.

What is the autoresponder address, let me see what you are getting and perhaps I can help.

Oh, yeah, if you want a paragraph break use [p] replacing the square brackets with uppercase comma and period.

Default Thanks, everyone...

I really appreciate everyone's suggestions.

I tried the Format-it program.

I tried the Shift-Return.

I didn't try the html [br] because the autoresponder
is supposed to be text only -no html allowed.

Nothing worked and everything worked.

Here is what I mean. I emailed the autoresponder
provider and questioned them. They said what goes
in, comes out...the old gigo principle: garbage in,
garbage out. They said to check my email program.

So I tried to find something in Netscape Mail that
would effect linespacing. I have found nothing
so far.

I checked the email in Pegasus...Surprise! It is
formatted properly.

So apparently the autoresponder is sending the email
out properly. It is the receiving email client
that is the problem.

So if anyone knows the secret to Netscape Mail,
let me know.

I guess I'll check stuff with Pegasus from now on...

Thanks again, guys and gal.

I know one autoresponder script that had this problem. I suggest you check with your autoresponder provider just to make sure. Older versions of the Varpro autoresponder script seem to have this problem. Lots of free autoresponder providers use this script.

Default Re: Varpro

Jim,

The autoresponder I am using apparently does use the Varpro script...

I discovered that Pegasus mail displays it OK,
but Netscape Mail displays double-spaced responses.

Default Try this quick online utility

See if this online utility helps you.

I use it all the time for my articles. And I use it for text ezines.

Default Thanks, Maria, I did...

test Format-it, and it works very well. After
further investigation, it seems that Netscape Mail
is the culprit. Pegasus displays the messages OK;
Netscape displays them with double spacing.

So far I haven't found a way to "adjust" Netscape
to get it to display the email properly. I don't
know if there are some hidden characters in the
autoresponder text or what, but it is very frustrating.

Thanks for your help.
