Default What do you do to relax?

Now that I've shifted fields of business, I realized that I do not know what it means to relax. For 18 years I worked everyday, all day, usually 12-16 hours a day. In all those years I never thought about relaxation, vacations or taking any time away from running my businesses.

So I need some ideas about relaxation. I don't like going to the beach. I did that all through out the 60's & 70's in Southern California. Scuba & surfing (Long Boards Rule) don't get my attention any longer.

I tried my hand at treasure hunting, but to costly and you have to deal with modern day pirates.

My wife won't let me get another motorcycle. I used to go pretty fast in those days. You know, "Need For Speed", "I Can't Drive 55" mentality. Ok so I've crashed once or twice, but I got up and walked it off.

I don't live anywhere that I can do any more repelling. Back in the 70's my brother and I worked for a government contractor and we were the men that filled the old dormant missile silos and where I learned to repel heights. The missile silos in the Mohave are all filled. So a trek back out there is out of the question.

So any daredevils out there. I need something to get the adrenaline going again.

Woody,

You're still a young guy, you like "speed", and you're looking for a challenge.

Check out the Sports Car Club of America.

I joined in 1988 when I lived in Bradenton. Had an old "beater" Mazda.

While I'd done a bit of drag racing in my younger years, never really did much of anything else.

I ended up winning the Central FL Championship that year. While I'd seen more than one "Hot Shoe" dump it in a turn and wipe out his Monday-Sunday ride, managed to keep mine all in one piece.

Try it. You'll like it.

Pete

Woody, if you can sit a Hog pretty good, why not try sitting a bull? Seriously, those guys make some pretty fair cash but they spend it quick on hospital bills and end up 'stove up' as they say for the rest of their lives. There's always bronc riding, too...not necessarily less dangerous but believed to be so by the general public.

There's always mountain climbing or whitewater rafting. Ah, there's a thrill especially when you climb standing waves (accidentally or on purpose).

Do you like horses? How about horse racing of one kind or another...steeplechasing being the ultimate imho.

Good luck and pleasure, fellow adventurer!

I see that your location is Florida.

If you are near the water why not try small-boat sailing or maybe sea-kayaking. The speeds are low, but being so "engaged" at the water level it feels like speed. Actually both activities can be done at a relaxed pace, high-intensity level or anything in-between.

Depending on where you live - you could do paragliding.

During my last vacation - I met a guy who learnt paragliding. And then gave rides to others for a fee.

He found a beach that was close to a small hill kinda thing. When he wanted to work - all he did is paraglided from the hill to the beach. Everyone on the beach would see him and then approach him on his landing. And he would then take 3-4 of them to paraglide one-by-one.

Did very very well.

Obviously - you can learn it for your own self - as a hobby too. No need to take others on a ride if you don't want to.

I was actually going to say the same thing.

A little 16 foot Hobie or Prindle catamaran can be a blast. I had one here in AZ until just a few years ago.

A 16 is small enough that you can rig and sail yourself but big enough to take out a couple other people.

Hard to explain but it can be intense and theraputic at the same time.

Extreme and relaxing all in one.
