XP v Vista - Feedback/Comments Wanted

Thanks a million, Marye! Guess it's more than I'd best bite off for now. Too much on my plate as it is. Nice to know about the alternative Mac etc...it's a definite idea when the time is right.

I'm just soooo fed up with Microsoft anything. I just had to reinstall my firewall because good ol' Gates crew mucked things up again. They keep turning theirs on which messes up my Kerio and and and....Grrrrrr! Yes, I have XP Pro so it should be better...or so everyone says. It would be if Gates's crew would keep their snoopy noses out of MY system...the one I paid for and he has a record of that payment via my registration.

How'd he like it if, every time he crawled into bed, I made him get up, change the sheets, prove he paid for the bed, and had him do l0 jumping jacks before he could use the bed? Same difference, IMHO.

On the XP Firewall: I turned it off as well. I mean, if you can't manage to keep gaping holes out of the operating system itself before it goes to production, why would I think your johnny-come-lately firewall was any good?

I downloaded both Kerio and a firewall called Safety.net. I installed the latter first, and was so happy with it that I never installed Kerio. It's small, effective, and doesn't XP Pro doesn't interfere with it. If you have problems with the XP Pro, I recommend you try Safety.net.

Thanks, Marye. Took your advice and downloaded the personal one to try safety.net. Can always go back to Kerio, if needed, as I have a paid for copy of it. BTW, if anyone is trying to find safety.net, it can be found at http://www.netveda.com/

The reason I turn off MS firewall is because Gates is 'in bed' with Gator/Claria et al...and that makes it a huge bad joke IMHO. I've been told it's only a one-way firewall at that so...only partial protection, if anything.

You'll want to pay attention to one of the tabs marked "app trust." Sometimes, when you're trying something that needs to talk to the outside world, safety.net will block it. When you click on that tab you'll see that the firewall is blocking it. Right click and allow it, and you're back in business. You can also do it through "control service" in the tray icon, but it doesn't "stick." It's just for that time. If you need to, you can reach me at meevansatswbell.net. I read today that the "Leopard" version of the Mac OS X which is due out in September has been dubbed "real Unix." Only three other companies producing Unix have been so certified! It means a really good GUI built on a stable, time-proven operating system! Ease of program installation, no/few malware threats to worry about, no beau coup bucks for upgrades that amount to "fixes!"

I'm saving my money. It's gotta be cheaper in the long run than the cost in time and money of maintaining Windows.

It also means with a little effort in your spare time, you can discover the thousands of freebies that are produced for Unix.

P.S. I turned off XP firewall and all the other cr*p that want's to "call home." I want to upgrade/fix when I want to, without worrying about whether a Microsoft automatic download has been compromised again.

I'm not anywhere near as 'geeky' as you, Marye, so if I don't 'get' something right away, you'll know why. Seem to have gaps in my knowledge but I never know where they are until I hit the fence and then...well, it's back up, learn, and take off again...

We have abandoned Vista for all our business customers. We install Vista in a dual boot configuration so they can try it out. The lack of drivers for many legacy devices make it a nightmare to install, especially in a business environment. Our customers want PCs that work out of the box, they don't care about transparent windowing. I hope this helps. Oh, and a little tip about making your computer virus safe. Get a motherboard with eSata ports on it, they're common these days. Use a different hard drive for surfing. When - and I do mean when it gets corrupted, wipe it out and restore it. Hope this helps.

Question. Your USB to IDE and USB to IDE&SATA adapter...

Does that mean, I can take an old IDE Hard Drive, plug it into the USB adapter, plug the adapter into the USB port of a modern computer that runs SATA Hard Drives, and be able to access my IDE as if it was any other normal thing plugged into a USB port, such as a Memory Stick?
