Default These THREE things could revolutionize your life... as they did mine

Have you ever heard of someone who aims to make $100, and ends up making $1000 instead?

Well, it does happen....

But someone who AIMS to make $1000 from the start is MUCH MORE likely to make that $1000 than someone who only aims for $100....

The sky is the limit.... Don't settle for a few peanuts when you can have big, ripe, juicy watermelons!

(Or insert your own favorite fruit or nut!)

What you think of yourself, you ARE..... If you think you're able to achieve great things, you CAN... But if you don't believe that, then you can't.... The key is getting yourself to the stage when you believe that you really CAN... And being PERSISTENT....

Then things can start to hapen!

I've always believed in myself.... I believed I could get a Ph.D. I believed I could get PAID trips to the USA from Australia -- and I have, every year since 1997 I've traveled to the USA and got PAID for it too, as part of being an academic....

And I have great belief in my business abilities....

How do you keep belief in yourself up? One important factor is the people who you surround yourself with....

Are your friends building you up, or tearing you down?

You'll find that many people mean well, but they think it is a favor to you to tell you why you CAN'T do this, why you CAN'T do that, why you CAN'T make this much money, why you CAN'T CAN'T CAN'T....

They'll say they are being "realists" -- but really they are being pessimists, but they don't know it...

Their intentions are probably good, in many cases... But they don't realize that they are actually harming you more than helping you... They are eating away at your confidence...

However, you'll find that there are other people who will help BUILD UP your confidence. These are the optimistic types...

These kinds of people will help to explain to you that you CAN achieve what you set out to achieve....

It is certainly possible....

I've been a life-long student of success principles. For most of these past years, I've applied them to my academic career and to my physics research....

And they work. After I finished my Ph.D., I won something called the "Mollie Holman Medal" from my university -- the award for the BEST Ph.D. in the SCIENCE faculty....

And I studied at Monash University, the biggest university in Australia in terms of number of students.... So there was LOTS of competition for that Medal....

However, I've found that academia is not what I really want to do with my life... I still love my physics research work (and I'm continuing it), but academia is too limiting....

And through the power of BELIEF I'm going to transform things into an incredible and some might say revolutionary direction in my life... I can see it happening before me... The pieces are all coming together.... :)

However, I don't really want to talk about me.... The point is it can happen for YOU too.... BELIEF in yourself, CONFIDENCE in your abilities and capacity for learning, and dogged PERSISTENCE will get you there!

I've used these principles in my physics career, with great success... So I know they work.... :)

I know it's sometimes easier to say than do... But make it easier on yourself, and surround yourself with those who will boost your CONFIDENCE, not those who will eat it up and take it away.... And you'll find incredible things happening, sometimes beyond your expectations! :)

Dien Rice

P.S. Here's a little secret... I never planned to get the "Mollie Holman Medal" for my Ph.D..... It was one of those things which EXCEEDED my expectations. But that just shows you the incredible POWER of belief, confidence, and persistence!

Default Dien, I Couldn't Agree More With YOU!

Some time ago I was privileged to read some very vital information and one of the most important things the information delivered was in the form of a test.

It went something to the effect of giving points to the people in your life and then adding up the points based upon a scale to see if the people we limiting you or benefiting you.

I am going to dig this test out and review it.

Any how your post rings so very true. It coincides deeply with the headline "They all laughed when..."

It is so verty difficult for people, these days and in these times, to muster up any reasonable belief in themselves.

It is much easier to believe in others and to believe in inanimate objects. Belief in oneself, seems difficult, mainly because it means we must
take responsibility for ourselves and our actions.

Noit many people want that responsibility as can be seen from the various news episodes dealing with various acts of violence and crime.

Taking responsibility for ourselves is the highest form of self-respect, IMHO.

I can ramble on and on about this but I just really wanted to say, Thank you for the post and the message.

Default How the small plant of your thoughts can grow into a mighty tree of your dreams come true....

Hi Taylor,

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.... It's true that who we surround ourselves with is one of the most important decisions we can make...

Surround yourself with sucessful people, and you'll probably find you are more successful too... And I think it's also important to surround yourself with those who will be supportive of your quest to fulfil your dreams....

The other side of that equation is also who YOU are... You should also try to be the supportive type yourself.... That way, you're also helping others around you....

You've seen my brother Thomas post here, he and I have this kind of relationship, we're very mutually supportive of each other. I believe we're both much more successful than we would be if we weren't like this...

Also, Gordon is like that too... He'll wisely share his experience, but I've found he is a very supportive type of person.... The kind of person I really enjoy being around, because he's so supportive....

And I know that Taylor you're this type of guy too... :) That's one reason why your forum is such a great place.... :)

And I've had many correspondences with others online who are like this too....

But even so, every now and then I find I have to defend myself from others who want to say "you CAN'T do this" or "CAN'T do that"....

It's not just now with my business plans and ideas, but it also happened before with my academic career.... I really dislike fighting with people, but when some of the people around you try to criticize you for pursuing your dreams, what can you do but answer back? If you listen to them too much, your dreams will vanish like a withered plant starved of water....

But with nurturing, those dreams can become reality, like a small plant grows into a mighty tree...

The hard part is, I know that many of these people often *mean* well, sometimes they really think they are doing you a favor.... But it's important to realize that they are NOT doing you a favor... They are just thinking too small...

Anyway, thanks Taylor.... I appreciate your comments.... :)

Cheers,

Dien

Default How come?

> Hi Taylor and Dien and All Sow Pub visitors!

> But even so, every now and then I find I
> have to defend myself from others who want
> to say "you CAN'T do this" or
> "CAN'T do that"....

****And the question I ask those naysayer types is, "How come?" (Asking "Why" tends to really intimidate those types of thinkers, so I try to be gentle with them as much as possible!)

> It's not just now with my business plans and
> ideas, but it also happened before with my
> academic career....

****Dien, I have found it happens ALL the time. I have this theory that basically anyone can get in anywhere by carrying a clipboard, a briefcase and walking tall and looking straight ahead.

And the "least of these" types can intimidate the "most of those"....case in point...when I was a 21 year old College Student I was studying at the United Nations. I was an Africanist at the time, writing a research paper on the Sahelian Drought....and as a part of my project I interviewed an East German diplomat.

(Yes, this was before the fall of the Berlin Wall, I am showing my age!)

I interviewed him for maybe 45 minutes and he was SQUIRMING in his chair....I thought it was REALLY funny! I maintained my dignified, clipboard briefcase persona throughout and got some great material for my paper which netted me another A....

I also noticed as an Investigator in my last job I could literally get ANYWHERE in the hospital doing the same thing....people literally move out of your way if you show that you know WHO you are and WHERE you are going...there is a Napolean Hill quote in there somewhere....

Whenever people tell me "You can't!" I stop and say, "Oh yeah, just watch me!"

And someone recently said something to me and I asked, "Is that a dare?" Knowing if I even dare MYSELF I will more than rise to the occasion. My mom used to tell me as a child, "Julie, knowing you, once you set your mind on something LOOK OUT!"

This past week I solved some HUGE problems for a close family member who had fallen so far into the fear trap that there appeared to be no way out.

From my vantage point its all about perspective and attitude. Choosing to be a victim or choosing to be a victor. Choosing your destiny or accepting the junk that falls in the road in front of you in the guise of an obstacle.

My family member wrote to me, after I outlined the steps I had taken to solve the dilemma, "Thank you for being such a calming force" and I was so tempted to write back, "And how can YOU become a calming force for yourself in the future?"

Instead we spoke on the phone, and I coached this individual into a proactive plan. Lets hope it sticks!

So this was a very long winded discourse on the next time someone looks at you and says either "I can't" or "You can't" you can ask "How come?" and tell some supportive "Yes, You Can!" stories.

We all have them.

Maybe you ought to catalog your own. Go through your mind and polish yours up, so you can tell one of your "I CAN's" in 30 seconds or less.

One of the greatest things about coaching is I even give myself some fun assignments, without even meaning to do so!

With Purpose and Passion,

JULIE

Default Your story, ready-to-tell.... Okay, here's mine (I haven't told this in full before)....

Hi Julie,

Wow, you've led quite an interesting life... :)

And I liked your story about being able to get anywhere if you carry a clipboard, a brief case and look straight ahead as if you know where you're going... I'm going to have to try that.... :)

Julie, I think often that you and I are really on a very similar wavelength...

When people tell me I CAN'T do something, I often look at it as a challenge too! I haven't used that line "Is that a dare?" yet, but heheh, it's a great idea... :) I'm going to have to try it... :)

I think you're right about having a few ready-to-tell success stories for when people say you "can't do" something or other...

My own personal one is actually do to do with physics. There's more to the story I mentioned before (though I've mentioned this briefly on the forum before)....

I actually flunked 3rd year physics the first time I did it. Then I did it again the next year, and did well enough to just get into honors (an optional 4th year undergraduate year here in Australia)....

Anyway, I worked REALLY hard during my honors year, and managed to get a scholarship to do a Ph.D. However, I wanted to do a THEORETICAL physics Ph.D., rather than an experimental physics one...

The head of the Physics Department asked to have a meeting with me. He sat me down, and told me frankly, "I don't think you can do a theoretical physics Ph.D." .... He was questioning my ability to do it....

Well, that just got me riled up! I went around to all my lecturers who were theoretical physicists, and asked them if they thought I had the ability to do a theoretical physics Ph.D. They all told me that yes, they thought I could do it....

Then I went back to the head of the Department. I told him what I had done, and what the responses of these theoretical physicists were.... That they ALL thought I could do it!

So he finally relented, and let me do a Ph.D. in theoretical physics.... (I needed to get his approval to do it....)

But that wasn't the end of it. I took his doubts as a challenge... I worked even harder....
Within the first year of my Ph.D., I had submitted my first physics article for publication.... This was quite fast, especially for someone doing a theoretical physics Ph.D. I felt I had something to prove, and I was driven to prove the head of the physics department wrong!

But it doesn't end there... I kept working hard throughout my Ph.D. I guess the final crowning achievement was that I got the Mollie Holman medal, like I mentioned earlier... for the BEST Ph.D. thesis in the Science Faculty....

Of course, the head of the Physics Department then congratulated me.... But as he was congratulating me, in the back of my mind were the thoughts, I STILL remember how you had no faith in my abilities.... But it seems you've changed your tune now!

I don't say this to boast, but to show how actually, the head of the physics department probably drove me to a great height of achievement, because I took his doubts about me as a challenge and a "dare"... :)

Julie... Somehow, I could see you doing something similar if you were in that kind of situation too.... :)

But I often use other people's success stories too.... Sometimes I remind people that Richard Branson never finished high school. I think of how Joe Sugarman had failure after failure after failure (as he mentions in his book "Success Forces"), before he started to have big successes.... I know a lot of people thought Anita Roddick didn't have a chance when she started The Body Shop... And on a similar note, everyone thought Debbi Fields would fail when she told them she was going to sell SOFT cookies in her Mrs Fields' Cookies store....

When you read these stories, you realize that it's not too wise to listen to what everyone else says... Be selective in who you listen to... :)

But it's GREAT to have a good circle of friends who are mutually supportive... I'm lucky that I have a circle of friends like that, which has increased to a good circle of online friends too since we started Sowpub... :) It truly is a type of "master mind"... :) Somehow, it becomes much easier to progress with your ideas when you have others who believe in your ideas along with you, and who are also traveling along the same kind of path....

Thanks Julie, I really enjoyed your entertaining stories... They always have wonderful positive vibes... :)

***It is startling how easy this one can be. Its all in the air with which one carries oneself. That single minded determination....

***I was thinking about this more this morning, and I was reminded of one of my favorite books, "La Princessa: Machiavelli for Women" by Harriet Rubin. It is a leadership book for women which does not use Machiavellian tactics instead it rewrites leadership for women using techniques that lend themselves to women's styles instead of making us into "Men in Skirts"...or however you would like to think of that.

For me, saying, "Is that a dare?" sort of comes in a complete package. The person I am talking to hears me saying, "Is that a dare?" with a smile and wide eyes, but underneath that is the message, "Thank you for the fuel which will guarantee I will succeed!"

It leaves the other person wondering, "Ok, what did I just do?" because the most successful technique is to say "Is that a dare?" and then end the conversation. Leaving people wondering is a great technique in being sure you will be remembered. (Also insures lots of party invitations! LOL!)

Have a stellar day! I am off to pursue yesterday's dares with magnificent results! :-)

Hi Kacper!

I had a mustard seed experience yesterday. It really blew me away. I know the promise, I have taught Sunday School for almost my entire adult life...it is in the surrender to this concept that the most amazing results have happened for me.

Have you seen how tiny a mustard seed is? I have heard from a friend who was a missionary and visited the middle east that it is like a speck of dust, not like the mustard plant here in the US. And the TREE is truly a full grown, amazingly large tree.

And just like you said, as we WANT them to, and have FAITH that they will by TAKING ACTION, success will happen.

We choose either to till the soil or plow it under.

Thanks for your words, Kacper.

Julie --

I always use the question "What would happen if you did?" In order to answer that question they have to consider the result in their head as if they actually did it. So an indirect way to get them considering success.
