![]() When I first started in the publishing business back in the mid-90's, I "accidentally" connect myself with the business sector without realizing what I was really doing at the time. Turned out to be one of those "good" accidents! You see, back when the Internet was really heating up for the first time, all I wanted to do was sell lots of info/how-to booklets all over the world. That was the "business model" I was attracted to. Instead, I wound up bypassing the private sector and focused my efforts upon the business sector instead.
What a great decision that turned out to be! You see, publishing for the commercial "end user" isn't all that different that publishing to the "residential" user. Services like MySpace, Twitter, FaceBook, etc. are all designed to plug you into a network of people who have a potential interest in your products. Throw out everything and keep the word "Network" in mind. In the business or commercial sector, the first time I connected with a Credit Union who purchased my publications to market their services to a client - I was IN a big network with a fraction of the effort it would take to do the same in today's "social networks." What advantages does the publishing information and marketing it to the commercial sector have over that of the private sector. 1. They have a lot more money to spend. A lot more than the average working man or woman who has to buy groceries, put gas in the car, etc. 2. They're used to spending hundreds and thousands of dollars to achieve their objectives. You've gotta sell a lotta books to JackTheFaceBook Guy to do the same in the private sector. What kind of stuff do you publish for the business market? *Training materials *Marketing courses *How-To information *Marketing and publicity services, etc. Your own publications that you're selling to the "private sector" can be used to validate your credentials (as an expert) to the business sector. It's a model I'm still using to this day to grow twice as large, twice as fast. Do I still market to the private sector? Sure. That accounts for 20% of my income. I have several products being created that give more concise information on how exactly to do what I'm talking about. But let me be honest in saying this... if you've been on this board over a period of years, there's probably very little that you don't already know about marketing. Maybe not so much about publishing... but you still have a solid grasp of the subject. What you have to ask yourself is; am I hunting squirrels when I should be hunting Buffalo? Yes, there's a lot of squirrels in the wild. But you have a "bad day" or "bad month" and you don't eat! You bag a Buffalo and not only do you have food for a few months, you can even make a jacket out of the thing. How many squirrels does it take to make a hat? -Jimmy Krug http://www.simplepublications.com |

![]() Jimmy,
I liked your old booklet site. Nothing better than someone who is actually doing what they write about. You published a lot of useful stuff. Which brings me to squirrel hats. My wife & I have a few acres in North Florida, about 10 miles south of the Georgia border. Several weeks ago we were sitting outside in the shade under a couple very tall oak trees, enjoying the afternoon, facing each other, talking. Cheryl's back was to the trees, so I was facing them. We hear a noise up in the tree. There's a slight breeze. I figure it's a small branch coming down. I don't want us to get hit, so I look up. I can hear it falling through the branches, but I can't see it. Then suddenly it emerges, falling right towards my wife. I see what it is, and in total disbelief, I yell, "MOVE!!!" I jump up and Cheryl jumps up. As she takes her first step, this lump falls to the ground about a foot behind her chair. It is a squirrel ... with a 5-foot snake wrapped around it. We were both astonished. We moved the chairs a fair distance away and watched. It took about 25 minutes for that snake to strangle the squirrel, unhinge its jaws, & swallow the furrball whole. As I considered the incident later, I realized there was an obvious marketing lesson. But I'm old and I can't for the life of me recall what it was. I'm sure it's obvious to you, though I don't think it had anything to do with squirrel hats. By the way ... very good point about commercial clients v individuals. Sometimes I lose track of that. Thanks for the reminder. Richard Dennis |

![]() You had the perfect picture of serenity until you got to the snake part
![]() I pictured a giant Anaconda as you were describing it. Then, I re-read what you wrote and took note of the 5' part! I suppose the marketing lesson is, it stinks being a snake without your own opt-in list... or something like that. ![]() To this day, I'm well persuaded that most online marketers are chasing squirrels for a living. Like your friend that fell out of the tree, they wrestling and waste far too much energy on "one squirrel." Instead, repackage the same information and target the business sector. All you need is an epublication or two under your belt to get started. That's how I did it. Then, you don't have to waste time everyday posting on every social site under the sun. You can spend time with family and friends. And you can update your blog, send out newsletters and do everything else at a much more relaxed pace. The key is to offer "value" with your products and services. I do the online publicity for a few TV shows in Tampa and Sarasota. You would think they have their own staff to do these things. They don't! They outsource. I used my mailing service to send out the mail for a Republican and Democratic Senator at my service at www.worldresponders.com. They send me the text and news releases - I send them out to the media. They send my company one email and they don't have to do another thing. I started the service back in 1997 to send my own emails out and then thought... I wonder if I could market this service to the commercial sector? The value comes in because they're not just paying to have an email "blast" account. They're paying national exposure which I have linked to my other site at www.mynationalpublicity.com If I did the reverse and marketed these two services to "residential" individuals, I'd have twice the volume of work with half the profit. Instead, I just reverse everything and target bigger companies and organizations. I have half the clients but triple the income. Funny thing is; I discovered this while trying to market my publications to "Joe the Plumber." I always wanted to be Joe's friend. I hated the corporate world and everything to do with at. After I plugged into the credit union back in the 90's and saw how much money the business had as compared to the private sector... that's all the convincing I needed. I should probably concentrate my online time these days to showing people how to do what I'm doing these days. That way I can spend my playtime writing about one of my favorite subjects in the world. ![]() Online marketing is one of the newest fields in which products are being given a global feel and look. It is quite a vast field and involves many sub aspects which need to be properly understood in order for a product to be marketed online properly.
The primary elements of online marketing that need to be understood are the business models that are currently prevalent. Primarily, a total of four models are being used by different businesses. The first one is known as e-commerce and involves B2B transactions and B2C transactions. B2B or business to business transactions are ones that take place between business with the supplier being one business and the customer being another business. These transactions are online in nature and are taking place in large numbers due to lots of businesses now going online. Last edited by MichaelRoss : May 8, 2009 at 04:45 AM. |
