Thanks for sharing this article, TW!

It shows you there are some interesting opportunities out there... Truly a win/win/win opportunity!

Here are a couple of British companies doing this business, for anyone who's curious...

http://www.comm-motion.com

http://www.autocarwraps.com

Also, here's one of the websites mentioned in the article, of an American company doing this...

Thats not actually a win for the company who does the car advertising.

Its very shot-gunney. And very pricey for a shot-gun approach. ($700 per car at 1,000 cars = $700,000 per month for an ad approach which is pretty much random.)

The only companies I see this working for are those that provide products like cable - or some other such utility that everyone requires.

And if they saturate a small area. Ads on 1000 cars all over USA is probably useless. But 1,000 cars in one mid sized city may get some good word-of-mouth going.

Even after that - buying ads on the side of the buses is a much better idea. You know the exact route and can concentrate your efforts in a given area.

Case Study:
In Bombay - buses are red in colour. A few years back when internet was still on dialup - a company came up with an offer: install their dialup browser that shows banner ads and call up a local number to browse for free.

The company had their eyes set on orange (as their mascot was a tiger). They paid money to get all the buses of the city painted orange for a couple of months - with their name and offer printed on the sides.

Became very popular very quickly.

And got a lot of free publicity too - as all the local media - newspapers, tv etc gave their opinion as to such advertising should be allowed on public buses or not...

Case Study # 2:

If you're doing car advertising - spend a bit more - and instead of going with decals - go with something that stands out strikingly in traffic:
Eg:

Phil may have a bit more to talk about this... how to make car advertising work...

Hi Ankesh,

I agree with you that it's very "shot-gunney" in that it more-or-less targets "everyone"... It's not very directed media.

However, the article TW linked to did mention the possibility of GPS... So, the company could only hire those who mostly drive within a certain area they wish to target, and they could perhaps install GPS so they can check on that. (How easy it would be to tamper with, I don't know!) So I think there could be some possibility of geographical targeting, by being very selective with drivers.

Best wishes,

Dien

Default Re: An intrusive marketing win-win-win...

Here's a mini-article I wrote quite a while ago that points up the ridiculousness of the anti-intrusive arguments...

____________________________

TITLE: An example of obnoxious, INTRUSIVE marketing
-- to KIDS, no less!!....
____________________________

Intrusive marketing is obnoxious!

It shouldn't be allowed!

If I want (to buy) something, I will. And I'll find it by myself, thank you very much.

I don't need any *intrusive* marketer barging their way into my life trying to force their product or service down my throat! I hate that! -- and so does everyone!

It's even WORSE when you try to get *intrusive* with my KIDS! -- Back off marketer! You leave my KIDS alone! You better not *intrude* into my kids' lives, you profiteering PIGS!

Here's an example of some *extremely intrusive* marketing I *personally witnessed* today! -- and yes, it was directed specifically AT KIDS -- trying to *intrude* on thier lives!... innocent, defenseless little KIDS!

Here's what happened!...

This overly-intrusive company got some big truck -- painted it all up with bright 'cheery' colors 'n stuff -- trying to camoflage their little *scheme* to SELL stuff to kids who don't know any better.

Then they added VERY LOUD music -- annoying everyone around... but SNEAKILY trying to appeal to KIDS even more...

Then they DELIBERATELY drive this truck to neighborhoods that they KNOW have lots of kids around.

Now, keep in mind, these kids are at their OWN HOMES... just minding their own business. They probably have NO INTENTIONS of buying anything.

But these marketing PIGS have NO SHAME -- they just go right ahead and INTRUDE on these neighborhoods... without ever being INVITED at all! --

No 'permission marketing' here! No way!

So... this truck has these 'pretty' colors, LOUD music BLARING -- and they drive into UNSUSPECTING neighborhoods full of kids --

and then they try to SELL the kids something that is almost certainly UNHEALTHY for them!!

Talk about *intrusive!!!!*

SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED! RUTHLESS, HEARTLESS MARKETERS PREYING ON INNOCENT CHILDREN LIKE THAT! LURING THEM IN WITH THEIR UNASKED-FOR, INTRUSIVE, SNEAKY METHODS -- and then selling them things that are PROVEN to be UNHEALTHY and could JEOPARDIZE THEIR WELL-BEING!!!!*

.....Ohhhhh..... but, wait a minute.....

maybe it SHOULD be allowed.....

....because the "intrusive" marketing that I witnessed today, is a simple, old-fashioned, ICE CREAM TRUCK!

-- TW

*Ice cream can be considered 'unhealthy' to some (most?) kids (America's "obesity problem") -- and keep in mind that the "Good Humor Man" sells to all kids (who give him da money) -- regardless of how thin or fat they are.

Do they make you sign something that makes you promise not to pick your nose while driving?

I wonder, because...

In essence, YOU become a semi-rep for the company, no? You, the driver, are 'on display' too, in a way, yes?

What about if you drive discourtiously? What if you drive like an SOB?
