Default Swim with the 'Sharks'

Wondering if anybody has been watching 'Shark Tank' on ABC.

It is a 'reality show' of the highest level.

Entrepreneurs come on the show, and in front of five "highly successful business tycoons, make their pitch for venture capital.

There's awesome by-play back and forth, and it is interesting to watch the way the panel off five self-made-multi-millionaires chew up the business model (or, in some case, embrace it with offers of investment money for a percentage of the business).

Some go away happy, and some are devastated ...

Lots of fun, though.

You can see some episodes on line at: http://www.sidereel.com/Shark_Tank

And, no, it is not an affiliate link! LOL

Default Shark Tank and Dragon's Den!

Hi Robert and Phil and all,

Thanks for mentioning "Shark Tank"! I was thinking about writing a post about this myself...!

I've been a fan of the British show "Dragon's Den" for a long time... There's also a Canadian "Dragon's Den". "Shark Tank" is the American version... The original, I believe, was Japanese...

(I think you can see the British "Dragon's Den" in the USA on cable TV. You can also catch a lot of episodes of all of these shows on YouTube...)

Firstly, it's a great show for an entrepreneurial education! If you have any entrepreneurial aspirations at all, it is good to watch it for a dose of "reality"... The "sharks" / "dragons" sometimes give some really good (and realistic) advice...

Entrepreneurship is NOT always "easy"! It is easy to throw away a lot of money, then throw more good money after bad. Many of these fledgeling entrepreneurs have not checked if there is a market for their product, or they have not solved the problem of competition (e.g. they may have no "toll position"), or haven't solved some glaring problems with their idea or their business. Watching this show is a good way to become aware of many of these things for your own business pursuits.

One thing I miss with "Shark Tank" compared to the British "Dragon's Den" is in the British show (and I think in the Canadian show too), they interview the fledgeling entrepreneurs after they've met the dragons, however, they don't do that in the American show. I think that's a shame, since what the fledgeling entrepreneurs have to say about the "dragons" (or would have to say about the "sharks") can be quite revealing about the fledgeling entrepreneurs' mindset... (And it helps to sometimes reveal the "wrong" - or "right" - mindset to have.)

Nevertheless, they are all great shows for an entrepreneurial education! In both cases, as I mentioned, the "sharks" / "dragons" give some pretty good advice, which is good to pay attention to if you have entrepreneurial aspirations yourself!

Default Shark Tank Update

For those here who have been watching 'Shark Tank' - from http://www.daymondjohn.com/power_jou...king-millions/

“Survivor” touts a $1 million grand prize and the winner of a season of “American Idol” winner can potential rake in millions, yet it’s ABC’s underdog reality show “Shark Tank” that arguably offers the most lucrative prizes for a typical contestant.

Below is list of entrepreneurs’ products pitched during the first eight televised episodes of the Mark Burnett series and how they are faring with (and in some cases, without) the sharks’ help. Here’s the report:

Life Belt (The Lifebelt Safety System)
Outcome: The entrepreneur, who refused a million dollar offer from the Sharks, just signed a 1.7 Million dollar deal with one large automotive dealership. With orders from national retailers (e.g. AutoZone and Hendrick Automotive) Rob is projected to make 30 million dollars by March 2010.

Mr. Tod’s Pie Factory (Sweet Potato and Chocolate Pecan Pies)
Outcome: Mr. Tod’s sales have tripled and he is currently opening a new retail location. Mr. Tod appeared on QVC and sold tens of thousands of dollars worth of his signature pies.

A Perfect Pear (A Jar of Tapenade)
Outcome: Susan’s retail sales have increased by 1,000% and she has been asked to sell her product on QVC.

Stress Free Kids (A Bestselling Children’s Book)
Outcome: Lori’s book, “The Angry Octopus” became one of Amazon’s top selling books and is now available in Borders bookstores nationwide.

Coverplay (Play Yard Liner)
Outcome: Amy and Allison are in final negotiations with the Marriott hotel chain, who is interested in carrying their Coverplay product in all their hotels worldwide.

Pork Barrel BBQ (Award Winning BBQ Sauce and Dry Rub)
Outcome: Before appearing on “Shark Tank,” Brett and Heath had their BBQ products in only three specialty stores, now they’re are in 300 supermarkets on east coast and will soon be available on the shelves of Costco. In addition to their retail success, Brett and Heath have also broken ground on their first Pork Barrel BBQ restaurant.

Treasure Chest Pets (Stuffed Animal with Hidden Compartments)
Outcome: Lisa recently closed a deal to sell her products online at “Bed, Bath and Beyond”, and in “Buy Buy Baby” retail stores.

Voyage Air Guitars (A Guitar That Folds in Half)
Outcome: After turning down a half million dollar offer from the Sharks, Jeff Cohen set out to make his unique folding guitar a household name. Now Jeff’s sales have doubled and he will have his guitar featured in 18 million catalogs e.g. Hammacher Schlemmer. Voyage Air Guitars are also in the hands of celebrity musicians like Brad Paisley and Alan Jackson.
