Last week, Google introduced a new feature in Gmail that allows users to permanently switch on SSL and use it for every action involving Gmail, not just authentication. Users who did not turn it on now have a serious reason to do so, as Mike Perry, the reverse engineer from San Francisco who developed the hacking tool, is planning to release it in two weeks."

The solution is to set Permanent SSL in Gmail

1.

Sign in to Gmail.
2.

Click Settings at the top of any Gmail page.
3.

Set 'Browser Connection' to 'Always use https.'
4.

Click Save Changes.
5.

Reload Gmail.

Note: People with Gmail Notifier will need to download a patch. Details.

Mobile/Firefox Users: I will make the immediate assumption that enabling permanent SSL will break all mobile access/apps and Firefox plugins. Edit: Palm T|X browser works, Palm TREO browser works, Gmail manager in FF3 works.

This is especially important for anyone using unsecured WiFi networks or anyone residing in buildings with unsecured networks. Although you may not know it, your wifi connection may jump on unsecured networks without your knowing. This has happened to me many times. This will put you at risk.

While you're at it, update that password. And throw in a few weird characters and numbers. Something like 'W@rri0rF0rum" goes a long way.

EDIT: Palm T|X works, Palm TREO works, Gmail manager in FF3 works.

eM Client is somewhat similar to Outlook and can be setup very easily to access your Gmail account. Like a POP email client, it will download and store the unread messages in your google account and then delete them off the Google server. This means if your account gets hacked

(#1, only the most recent messages since the last check (mine is set to check every 10 minutes) would be there. So almost all of your messages are safely stored on your own computer.

(#2, you have all of your settings to set your account back up again.

You can also manage your Google calender with program.It also has a built in Instant Messaging service which will allow you to communicate instantly with other users of Jabber Instant Messaging network as well as many other Jabber compatible networks such as Google Talk, ICQ, AIM etc....

There is a free version, limited to two email accounts (which is fine for me because I only have one Gmail account), and a pro version for $50 which can handle an unlimited amount of email addresses.

The free version doesn't have any other restrictions other than it's limited to two email accounts.

I too had a Gmail account deleted a couple years ago and was never told why and at that time there was only a forum with others in the same shape but no answers.
