![]() I like to keep on top of the trends... This one's pretty interesting...
It turns out that goats are becoming all the rage in Portland, Oregon! Specifically, these are pygmy goats. People are keeping them as pets! Easier to take care of than a cat, they say. Quieter than a dog. Plus they help "mow your lawn" and you can get milk from them, too. And they're kind of cute, as well! ![]() One of the keys to their popularity is that in Portland, you don't need a permit to keep up to 3 pygmy goats. (If you needed a permit, that would probably dampen the popularity, as it's a "hurdle" people would have to cross...) Could this take off elsewhere, too? Apparently, keeping chickens as pets has rocketed in popularity. Maybe pygmy goats will, too? You can read more about it here... http://www.kgw.com/news/Urban-goats-159509885.html With any new trend, there is always an opportunity... One example of an opportunity would be breeding pygmy goats. Other opportunities are manuals, videos, and membership websites - all about how to choose, care for, and things you can do with your pet pygmy goat! For other ideas, think of all the products and services associated with cats and dogs. Could there be an equivalent product or service for owners of pygmy goats? For an un-obvious example of an opportunity, here's a link to a couple articles (from one of Phil's posts) about an entrepreneur who created diapers for chickens... ![]() http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/217450 http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...083644624.html - Dien Last edited by Dien Rice : June 21, 2012 at 02:42 PM. |

![]() I have the room to raise critters like this, but my neighbors would consider them to be THEIR opportunity.
http://www.etsy.com/listing/10147293...w_type=gallery I like hearing them sing, but I don't want to buy them dinner. Last edited by Bozo : June 21, 2012 at 04:28 PM. |

![]() Do the goats respect boundary fences, I wonder. I'd hate to cause issues with the neighbours. Someone in our area has got some peacocks which seem to roam free; I guess they probably should but they're definitely not top of the popularity polls in the district.

![]() We raised goats when we lived in CA. No they don't respect fences or any boundaries. If they can get thru, bingo! they will. We did not raise pygmys only the full sized critters.
Our neighbor, 5 houses down, raised pygmys. Real cute but a real pain in the a**. What people forget is they are animals and need to be taken care of properly and fed correctly. I could preach on and sound like an idiot PETA member but I'd bet the animal shelters will be full of pygmy goats by the end of the year. Too bad for the animals that the humans in charge don't have a brain. |

![]() These goats are probably fine as pets, if properly taken care of and properly confined and protected. Probably not so good as an investment.
Back during the Emu craze that was primarily in Texas, but spilled over into my town, people lost everything betting on them. There was even an Emu Burger joint that stayed open for almost a month. I tried one, like a lot of people. Wasn't bad, but nothing to write home about. Some people tried to sell Emu Oil, which must have been a bear to collect. Supposed to be good for aches and pains. I flew a guy around so he could locate his lost $5,000 bird. Never saw it. Those goats do look tasty though. Kind of a spendy meal. |

![]() Quote:
Phil, Nice post. When we raised goats, we sold their milk. Lots of babies can only drink goat's milk. We also made cheese and ice cream. Whenever we were invited to a bbq or get together the standing order was to bring ice cream and cheese ![]() My kids didn't have cow milk or cavities until they were teenagers. They even liked goat meat hamburgers better than regular hamburgers. A goat roast or rack of ribs is also hard to beat. We couldn't keep a garden because they always figured how to get in. They'd eat all the vegetables in one fell swoop. Annoying as hell. I can wax on for hours but suffice it to say, I love those animals. Tom |
