![]() My father ran the UK's biggest domestic alarm company at one time - now we are looking for new direct sales products and looking to the US for ideas.
Does anyone know the top selling direct-sales products in the US at the moment? |

![]() 30 yrs ago I started a burglar alarm co from my apartment with 2 screaming babies and a frustrated, worried wife.
I had just lost a job (that I didn't care much about) and I found a company selling a burglar alarm that would pick up a phone...spin the dial and give a recorded message. It was a glorified Tape answering machine. I took that device and went out and sold it to homeowners. I started with 1 installer and in 7 yrs I was able to sell it for a bundle. It was the 3rd largest alarm co in the northern suburbs of Chgo. Many days, I went door todoor selling my alarm syatem to store owners for $500 down and $30 a month. I sold hundreds. I was (still am) an ACE Direct Salesman. One thing about "Direct Sales"...YOU can pretty much choose your own product or program because MOST people would NOT consider Direct Sales as a means of earning a living. They do not think they would be good at it (be able to close deals) or it "scares them to death"! The blow to their ego when someone says "No!" I have a friend who's selling water filters the way I sold them in college...the "puppy dog". Leave the unit at a prospects home or biz and come backto pick it up in a week. MOST will NOT let you remove the unit. One day, on a dare, I showed a friend how to make $1000 A Day in direct sales...on an investment of $140. I took him down to Cook Brothers (warehouse district of Chicago) a wholesale house with all kinds of household products. I was interested in their "Ceramic Coated Pots & Pans" sets. These were colorful pots and pans, usually with green peppers, orange carrots, red apples etc. I bought 20 sets for $7 ea. Loaded them in my trunk and drove over to a high rise office building. Parked in the lower parking lot...handed him 4 sets...I carried 2. Went to the top floor. Went to the first office door...went inside...set the boxes down in front of the receptionists desk...placed one box on her desk and opened the box as I was saying the following; "Hello! We are coming from a housewares show at McCormick Place. We had these sets of terrific cookware left and instead of sending them back to California...the boss said to "move em out"...so, instead of the $79 per set...I can let YOU have a set for just $29". As I was saying this I took out a quarter and started scratching the bottom of a pot, "See! Ya can't scratch these! Here, feel how solid and heavy it is!" (As I handed her a pot) She usually felt it and said, "Yes! This is nice! How much did you say these are?" By that time another secretary was approaching the desk. I handed her a pot and said, "We just came from a housewares show. These are normally $79...I can let these go for $29 OR...if YOU would like a set also...they're $27.50 ea!" By this time a 3rd and sometimes a 4th girl would appear. I would then tell them if all 4 bought a set they'd be $25 a set. I sold 2 to 6 sets per office. Sold the 20 sets in less that an hour...went back and got 20 more sets. Did 80 sets that day at an average of $25 a set. My friend could NOT believe what he had just witnessed...SO...the next morning...guess where he is...yup...Cook Bros. He went on to average 40 sets a day at $25 a set earning him a nice $1,000 a DAY. I'll bet Cook Bros is still in biz in Chgo...and I'll bet the same cookware sets are STILL $7 ea and I'll bet "I" could STILL sell to secretaries in almost any city with the same spiel. So...if you ever find yourself in need of some fast, LEGITIMATE CASH...think about what you just read and get out there and SELL! ![]() Don --
You are right on with the advice here. Hope it's useful to some here. I wanted to comment on this: > I have a friend who's selling water filters > the way I sold them in college...the > "puppy dog". Leave the unit at a > prospects home or biz and come backto pick > it up in a week. MOST will NOT let you > remove the unit. This again is absolutely right. In west Texas, where the water is horrible but most are used to it, we would take a portable unit with us. Make two glasses - one filtered, one not - and set them on the counter. One was visibly cleaner. We would hold up the clear water then have them smell it. No reaction there since there wasn't really a smell. Then have them taste the filtered water. "That's good isn't it?!". Then smell and taste the regular water. Usually they couldn't even get past the smell the chemicals and such were so strong. Many people would buy on the spot after that. For the others we would leave the portable unit hooked up and retrieve it a few days later. For anyone wanting to try this there is a little trick - you have to let them taste the filtered water first. Otherwise the unfiltered water will leave a taste in their mouth and dilute the good taste of the filtered water. -- Dan Butler http://www.TheNakedPC.com/ Don't leave home without them... |

![]() Hi Don,
Thanks for posting that story.... It's a great true story! It shows that there are PLENTY of money-making opportunities around.... It takes some knowledge of where you can get sources of stuff to resell, and knowing a way how to sell them. Thanks for sharing the story.... It's a great inspiration that these opportunities do exist, and sometimes they can reasonably simple! :) - Dien Rice |

![]() Don,
In my younger days, I was a Ray Charles fan (Much to the chagrin of my parents). You know the "America-The-Beautiful" Ray Charles with the gravelly voice? I used to say that I'd pay good money just to go hear him "holler." (In some of his music, he does a good bit of that - sometimes it's the highlight of the song, after he's worked you up to a fever pitch with that voice!) Any way, I'm rapidly becoming somebody who'd pay just to hear what else is coming out of your brain! Mary |

![]() Mary....I LOVE your Spirit and Sense of humor and WIT! You are a "One-Of-A-Kind"...and what really would make ME feel good is to hear that YOU have "hit a BIG one"!
YOU have it within YOU to do something "great"! No BS! The first time I heard your voice on the phone I could SENSE..."something wonderful" inside YOU! All you need is the "right" idea for you. Maybe...one of these days I can come up with something that works for you. Oh...watch this! I live in a small town in the Pacific NW, Roseburg, OR (pop 22,000 and a lot of trees, cattle and sheep) We now refer to it as "Coffee Country". Well...just for the heck of it the other day...I asked a friend of mine, who owns 4 drive thru coffee huts...approx. how many Lattes & Capachinos was he selling a month, at $3 a whack. What he told me bolled me over. Just in his 4 drive thrus he is selling 26,000 cups of $3 coffee A MONTH!...about $75,000 Retail worth of COFFEE! Well...THIS got me wondering and thinking. I then did some research and went around to the other coffee huts and made an astounding compilation; In this dorky little town of 20,000 odd...they are selling 60,000 CUPS OF COFFEE A MONTH! Well...these numbers caused me to sit down and do some serious thinking. Then....I got it! I figured out a way where "I", Mr Idea Man, Don Alm...could make 18 cents from EACH CUP sold...every month! Now...18c does NOT seem like a lot BUT...multiply this by 60,000 and NOW we're talking some SERIOUS NUMBERS!...each and every month. And...once I get it put together here...I can go to the bigger towns where more coffee is being sold. Sorry I can't divulge just yet BUT...when I get the thing up and going I'll let you know. I recall reading about a similar tactic used by the infamous F. Lee Bailey during one of his "earlier" trials. It seemed a young lady was identifing the defendant in a murder case by the "signature" cologne he wore during the crime. So good ol' F. Lee set out to test the theory of whetehr she could discern different odors in court. He lined up a number of vials filled with cologne and a few other "common" household odors. Strategically F. Lee had given her a vial of gasoline to sniff after she had answered the cinnamon, vanilla, a lady's cologne perfectly. The gasoline, much like tasting the bad water first, impaired her senses... Lo and behold! She couldn't differentiate between the following vials of men's cologne setting the defendant free! Verdict, Not guilty! Sales and Marketing are everywhere if you just take the time to look. Success and Regards... Mike |
