can you convert msworks files to pdf? or should i
consider writing my book in another format?

Joe,

I don't see why not. When you convert using Adobe it's just a matter of selecting Adobe as your printer, and then printing your document. Instead of printing a pdf file is created.

I've never actually done it, but I just checked and Adobe is an option from MS Works on my computer.

The only thing that I've actually converted are MS publisher files.
