Default PRIVACY ... the easy way!

After the recent airing of the CBS "60 Minutes" segment about "cookies," I have encountered a number of articles and postings regarding "Privacy on the Internet." -- Most of them advising that to maintain your privacy, set your computer to "Disable Cookies" - or - have your computer warn you when you are receiving a cookie, so you can reject it.

Either way might work - but ...

There is absolutely no need to disable cookies.

At the end of each day, simply do a "Find File" or "File Search" ... type in "cookie" and your computer will tell you where the cookie file is located.

If you open that file, the heading will tell you "Do Not Delete this File" ... with a bunch of double talk -- BUT ... All ya gotta do is delete that cookie file. Your browser will create another one, tomorrow, but none of the cookies you've received before will be there. Then, tomorrow, at the end of the day, "delete" the cookie file, again ... every day, or week.

Default Security Secrets from Los Alamos National Laboratory

I've been to Los Alamos National Laboratory. I was there in 1998. Can't say too much -- top secret you know!

That's where they invented the atom bomb. It's where the US still does the top research on nuclear weapons and other types of advanced weaponry.

Actually, Los Alamos has three security areas.

The first security area requires the highest clearance.

The second security area requires a medium level of security clearance.

The third security area still requires clearance, but only if you are not a US citizen.

Okay.... I was in the third security area. As a US citizen, I didn't require any clearance. That's where the research in my field was being done. Nothing weapons related, I assure you! Just simple quantum optics (the science of how photons -- "particles" of light -- behave).... At Los Alamos, they're doing some exciting experiments and I visited another physicist I know there for a few days to check it out....

They don't only do weapons research there, but also research work on quantum computation. Trying to build a NEW type of computer, that works on the basis of quantum physics. If they could build one, it would be faster than anything we've seen before.

That's what *I* was there for. :)

But this highlights the importance of privacy. Los Alamos National Laboratory knows how important it is, especially in their "high security" area (which was too secure for me to get into)....

Thanks Jim for your excellent advice! I take it to heart. Like Los Alamos National Laboratory, I keep an eye on my privacy. :)

Do you want to know how much people know about you when you are surfing?

Here's how to find out....

Go to http://privacy.net and Click on "Analyze your own connection."

It could surprise you.

You'll also find a lot of great privacy information there too.... It's well worth your time to check it out.
