Families Online - a niche to be explored?

This article in my local Vancouver Province Newspaper about how families spend their time online got me wondering how this could be explored for niche marketing.

Hi Anya,

This statement in the article stood out for me:

"39 per cent of parents said they sometimes go online with their kids, and 12 per cent said they always go online with their children."

Are there many web sites which are designed for family activities, where several members of the family can participate? (Possibly on two or more networked computers within the home?)

We know that many people are looking to do more things together as families nowadays. There must be ways that this could be tapped on the internet.

I'll warm up the brain (I find cocoa to be a great brain-warmer) and see if I can think of anything.... :)

But your thoughts mirror mine. I wondered too, how many sites there are where kids and parents can actually participate together. I have kids (3 boys) and so I know there are lots of sites out there (like www.neopets.com) that pull in alot of traffic from kids and adults alike, but you really can't participate together - you have to take turns and so you end up fighting over computer time.

The person that figures out how to make the internet simultaneously interactive for kids and parents could have a very good thing going.

The BEST of the WEST!

Dien and Anya,

When my kids (age 7 and 3) go online, I am right there with them looking over their shoulder. They like to go online and play games at www.bigidea.com and www.larry-boy.com (VeggieTales games) or sometimes www.pbskids.org, the Public TV kids website.

I used to be afraid of what they might happen on to by accident, but yesterday I installed a filter that should block most of the garbage. (Of course, nothing is 100% foolproof.) The filter I installed is a very conservative filter; it may be too restrictive for some. If interested, go to www.afafilter.com --no affiliation here, nor compensation for mentioning it.

My 7 yr old son can't wait until he gets his own computer...
