Would You Do This?

Hello,

First, let me say it's been a loooong time since I've posted any messages here. I have, however, been visiting... quietly. :-)

O.K.... on to: "Would you do this?"

Today I stopped at a house that is up for sale. (The open house is tomorrow.) The retired couple had a garage sell... yet, they still have a LOT of nice items they no longer want, and don't want to spend any more time packing, moving, or garage selling.

I was instantly reminded of some of the posts by Gordon about selling items... chatteling.

So, I wondered... what if I offered to remove *everything* from the garage for them in exchange for them to allow me to keep whatever I want from the garage.

That way... the job for them is finished. And, I might have some items to turn around and sell.

So first... do you think this is a good idea... a win-win situation for both of us?

And second... if so, would you try selling the items on ebay? (I have *no* experience/knowledge of selling or buying on ebay.)

I would love to get your thoughts/opinions on this idea.

It Works!

I personally think it sounds like an interesting opportunity. And it could be fun. I've heard of people who have done exactly what you propose. If I came across a situation like that right now I would consider it.

However, I would also closely consider various ways to resell the stuff. And whether I would really want to do any of them. Such as maybe have my own Garage Sale with the stuff. Sell it a flea market. Take the items to consignment stores. I think there could be lots of options. Of course it could strongly depend on what you have.

This is especially true with eBay. I have only sold around ten items on eBay, but it's enough to know that some items sell well on eBay and others do not. I usually search to see if I can find similar items to stuff I want to list and find out whether it sells well or not.

I personally find selling via eBay kinda a hassle and would rather hold a yard sale. Except when I'd think I could get more money from eBay.

Here's a good example. I found some napkin rings at a yard sale for five bucks. I looked on eBay to see if could find any like it. Someone had listed eight of the same kind and they sold for about eighty dollars. Sometime later I listed four of mine on eBat and they sold for about thirty dollars. It's very unlikely I would've sold it at that at a yard sale.

All and all I think approaching this couple and asking to take the stuff off their hands can't hurt.

I think I would do this just to see what treasures
I might come across. So many people have trinkets
that they don't know the true value of. Ebay is
time consuming as you pointed out but has put a
lot of money in my pockets. Lately I sell items
that I have many copies of and just keep relisting
them. This is fast and easy. Digital products
work great here for example.

I would go *beyond* this. I would see if I could make a deal on the *ultimate* chattel as well. Their home!

There are retired couples who just don't want the hassle anymore. If they were motivated enough, you just might be able to make a deal that works for everyone.
