E-zine advertising and free ad sites

Has anyone had any success with e-zine advertising? What about the free internet ad sites? I am considering trying both routes but have heard good and bad things about both. I would like to know if anyone had any actual experiences with either of these two methods of advertising. I would greatly appreciate any advice you can give me.

I gotten excellent results with carefully
targeted ezine ads. That means ads written for
the audience which reads that ezine and who would
be interested in what I offered. I've always
done better with paid ads than free ezine ads.
Ezines offering free ads to subscribers don't seem
to have a good readership in my experience unless
they have a lot of good (original)content.

I have place ads in a wide range of ezines and
been disappointed with many. The biggest aren't
necessarily the best. Ads run in ezines with
nearly 300,000 circulation have sometimes done
worse than ads run in ezines with 10,000
circulation.

I've never had good results with placing online
ads either. With many of these sites the ads
are place automatically and no one ever sees them.
I don't think they are a good investment of your
time or money.
