My Mother used to take us 3 boys to the library regularly.

She took the Unsmiling lady at the desk
bags of Squash or tomatoes or potatoes or Beans.

Then.

When one of us LOST a Book for a few months.

And we Should have had to pay a big Penalty.

This GRIM LOOKING Lady would Smile and say, "Forget it."

We must have saved 100's of dollars in Late
fees like this.
