Default Reflections

Dear Friends,

Greetings from Costa Rica! It’s been difficult for many of us to resume our businesses after the events of last month. It’s been hard for me to know what articles to write for my ezine. I felt that perhaps some of you would enjoy the article that I sent out this morning. Please find it below.

Blessings to you and yours,
Brenda

Reflect on Your Life
by Brenda Maxfield

Did you ever sit quietly next to a lake? Remember how the air smelled of grasses and flowers, and the sky was a perfect clear blue? You listened to the water gently lapping the shore. You breathed deeply, inhaling beauty and exhaling all the stresses of your life. Perhaps you picked up a rock and tossed it into the lake, watching the water ripple with the echo of the splash.

It was a perfect time for reflection.

I believe that peaceful, uninterrupted reflection on our lives is a deeply important part of living. With the events of last month, now is a wonderful time to practice that reflection. When we are faced with cruel events and incredible sadness, we naturally start to question what is important in life. Is it that new gizmo we were planning to buy next week? Is it making sure everyone gets out the door on time, even if you have yell and scream to make it happen? Is it attending that party that you know is going to be boring and superficial?

What is important?

This week, why not try to answer that question in a thoughtful way? Write down your answers. Then look at what your daily schedule holds. Does it support your answers?

Perhaps you have decided that one thing of great importance to you is spending more time with your spouse and/or children. Take a moment to consider your daily schedule. Does it reflect that goal? Or is it cram packed with activities that actually take you away from your spouse and children?

Recently my husband and I decided that we were not spending enough time together. Now understand that we drive to school together and drive home together. At our international school, we often pass each other in the breeze ways. But just being in the same place together was not what we meant. We wanted more time to be intimate, to connect with each other’s hopes and dreams.

We decided that instead of me working on the computer all evening with Paul busy doing other activities, we would each work on projects for one hour and then meet together in our bedroom. We would read aloud from an inspirational book. We would talk about the day. We would share our present dreams and how we could help each other reach those dreams.

We began spending one rich hour together every evening really communicating.

It was amazing. Our intimacy level simply soared. I began to feel like I was back in college, spending time with Paul during those first exhilarating months.

The discipline (yes, and sometimes the hassle) of meeting together was well, well worth it.

This is just one example of how reflection caused us to make some changes in our routine. Maybe you need to reflect on your business. Are you doing those activities that will take you where you want to go? Or are you getting caught up in too many time wasters?

Maybe you need to reflect on your inner life. Are you engaging in activities that will enrich your spirit and creativity? Or perhaps you need to reflect on your physical condition. Are you eating well, exercising?

Only you know what areas of your life need reflection. And if you’re not sure, spending time just sitting and thinking will tell you. Because your heart does know. It’s simply waiting for you to listen.

So I encourage you to take some time this week. Make it special. Sit in a pleasant, beautiful place. Play some soft music. Relax and think.

And then make those changes that will help you towards that life of your dreams.

Blessings to you and yours . . .
