Default 3 by 5 Thank You Note Gets Lafeyette Hugs

Howdy,

Just got this From a coaching client.

I called him back. Turns out the cook is the girls Father!

Glenn

P.S. - What good is this? Lafeyette lost his job. Got a gig as a waiter.
He now gets more tips than all the other waitresses combined.

How?

Pre-written 3 by 5 Thank You Notes (He enters the name)

-----------------
Dear Glenn,

"I gave a waitress a Thank you card.
All I told her was (I appreciate your smile.
And the effort you make to make me feel welcome.)

"Now I get Free Coffee when I go in.
And she HUGS me everytime I show UP.

Although the Cook makes me nervous. He GLARES at me.

What up with THAT?"

Lafeyette

Default Addendum

Years ago (70's) when I began pounding the pavement in an 18 wheeler doing long haul I would leave tips even though there was a great possibility of never stopping there again.

Then for a year I was doing an inter-province run daily and ate breakfast at the same stop every morning. Pretty much daily there would be 2 - 4 drivers from the company that would stop there for breakfast also about the same time and then head off in the direction of the runs for the day.

There were 4 waitresses and 3 weren't the greatest....4 days and 4 different waitresses. On the 5th day I got the good one for the second time.

After I was done I flipped over the paper placemat and drew a large circle. Within the circle I placed 3 quarters and six nickels (back then this was just a little over the 20%).....2 eyes, a nose, and 6 nickels for the mouth....with eyebrows over the 2 quarters for the eyes....and left...that was Friday and I was the last driver to leave as I had a short run that day and was in no hurry so I nursed a second cup of coffee....most days it was in and out pretty quickly.

The following Monday when I walked in the waitress spoke and said my coffee was on the table and pointed to it. I ordered the same breakfast as I had all the previous 5 days...and she asked if I ate the same thing every day...and the answer was yes.

Now the thing about this was the restaurant was situated such that the windows looked out over the parking lot as well as the off ramp to get to the restaurant...and I was driving for a company with unique looking tucks and a well known name on the highway here... and each truck just a little different. That being said....

On the Tuesday after the coffee was in place....when I walked in...the waitress said it was on the table and pointed me to it...and there sat my breakfast and coffee all ready and waiting for me...and so it was each morning from then on until I switched runs a year later back to long haul. She would see my truck coming on the off ramp and put in the order....and by the time I got parked, hit the washroom, and then entered the restaurant was enough time for the breakfast to be cooked and sitting waiting for me....all because of a smiley face tip....and yes I did keep tipping but not with the smiley face.

And the other drivers never did figure out why my breakfast was always ready and waiting )

Addendum...I was switching runs just after the Christmas holiday....in the course of kibitzing with the waitress the week before Christmas I found out that she had asked Santa for a certain sweater but their finances wouldn't allow for it.....so on the 24th of December (my last day on the run), and after I had finished breakfast and gone out to the truck I came back in and handed her a wrapped present and abruptly turned around and left...on the package a smiley face with the words "Just Because"...and tucked inside a little note saying--"Just a little extra thanks and appreciation for making my days a little easier"....my runs never took me back that way again.

Thanks Cornell, that's a great story!

Default Why Gary Halbert Tipped By Giving Cars & A House

Thanks Guys,

Gary Halbert taught me to tithe in ways that ATTRACT 10 to 100
TIMES more munny than I give away.

TRUE.

I've seen Gary give a valued staffer a 1 yr old Mercedes.

Others have told me they got nearly new automobiles too.

One fellow tells me Gary gave him a house!

YIKES.

I'm working very diligently at boosting the size of my Tithing too.

Gary generated massive amounts of LUCK.

You can't measure Good-Will.

But you CAN Track things such as Moolah, Munny, Gold.

He attracted multi-million dollar clients. Earned huge fees. And did it
while wearing a T-shirt or hat that said, "All Clients Suck."

(EDITOR'S NOTE - Just spotted an article about owner of 421 million
dollar "Padagonia" who ran a Wall Street Journal and Magazine ad
with a headline - "Don't Buy This Shirt." Got 1000's of new buyers.)

BACK TO
1.00
LOTTO TIPPING.

The Goodwill and Reciprocity Rewards are amazing.

But it's tough to get others started.

So.

I start small.

Tithing takes Salesmanship. You try walking up to a total stranger and giving
them a 1.00 bill or a 20.00 - many can't do it.

But a 1.00 LOTTO ticket is easier.

AND
let's Focus
on EMPATHY.

IF you've ever worked as a waiter/waitress.

You've been ignored.
Insulted.
Verbally and physically assaulted. (Pushed, shoved, tripped)
Cursed.
Fired because a customer complained to the manager.

ALL of the above have happened to me.
And I've seen much worse done to others.

THINK.

COGITATE.

Slow down and consider what happens if your waiter or waitress FEARS YOU?

DISLIKES YOU.

Expects - at best - to be ignored and taken for granted.

HA!

This is Exactly how - you - a Stranger are perceived.

But...

JUST SUPPOSE Your Cashier LOVES YOU!

What If you "Smile, Say "Please and "Thank you AND Hand out LOTTO Tickets.

You Become a God or Goddess (In contrast to others)
in the eyes of the wait staff.

TEN YEARS AGO Dan Kennedy told me he tips with 20.00 bills.

WANNA' BET he's not using 100.00 bills today?

TRY IT.

Thanks,
Glenn Osborn

P.S. - My Wendy's Example above doesn't happen all the time. Especially
when I visit a new Restaurant.

But here's what DOES HAPPEN.

I get EXTRA- ORDINARY service and food.

AND

Every time I eat with a client.

I send 5 bucks back to the chef. Tip the waiters and wait staff with
Scratch Off Lotto tickets and 1.00 bills each time they visit the table.

Others get their food late. It's over-cooked. Under-cooked. Of poor
quality. And all kinds of other problems crop up.

ME?

The waitress and cooks coddle me. Hover and know my name.

WHY?

Because I GIVE Their Tip BEFORE the meal. Smile and Praise and say, "Thank You."

All the F-r-e-e stuff - AT THE Restaurant - is a fun way to measure the
POSITIVE ENERGY you've created.

But the Big PayDay comes from opening that big universal door.
Pay-it-Forward pays off. Not right away - but always.

Hi Glenn,

Thanks again for sharing this... I believe it's a hugely important tip...

Of course, having a generally "generous" spirit can help too, in your day-to-day dealings with people. It cements relationships... People want to help you too, if they've received help from you.

One lesson I've had in the past is that... as the saying goes, "no man is an island" (or woman, for that matter).

Every success you've had, in 99.9% of cases, there have been others who helped you in some way. Whether they were mentors, colleagues, partners, suppliers, friends, family, and so on...

Certain relationships are important. The right relationships open the right doors - sometimes when you least expect it!

I like to do favors for people... and I know, in return, people have done favors for me, sometimes just out of nowhere, but also sometimes at a time when I critically needed the help. I didn't "plan" it that way - but in retrospect, I've noticed that, this is the way the world works...

Thanks again, Glenn!

Best wishes,

Dien

Default How free falafel balls helped a restaurant succeed....

So....I thought; "Why not FORCE them to get into a "Buying" mood by... GIVING THEM A COUPON WORTH $1 TOWARDS THE PURCHASE OF ANYTHING IN THE SHOPPE"?

Well....that did it! They'd come in....I'd welcome them and say, "Here's $1 to spend on ANYTHING in our Shoppe!"

I called the Coupons, "BROWSER BUCKS"!

Worked like a charm. Sales doubled. Had a few people bring me 4, 25cent marbles and hand me the Browser Buck. AND....had quite a few people hand me the Browser Buck and ask...jokingly, "Can I use this Coupon towards the purchase of this $2,500 CupBoard?"

What this coupon did also was....STOP THE NEGOTIATING MENTALITY!

When people see an item in an Antique Shop they're interested in...they usually ask, "Would you take anything less, on this?" or...."Would you take X$ for this?"

By handing shoppers a FREE $1....I had ALREADY given them a Discount and, because most people aren't "Greedy"....my Browser Buck STOPPED most negotiating. Can you see the Psychology here?
Hi Don,

It was a smart solution...

I can see how giving them a "gift" like that would turn them from a "bargain-hunting" mentality, to more of a "reciprocity" mentality, where they may even feel a debt of gratitude...

My view on these kinds of things is, it's "win/win" for everyone. The shop owner wins, and the customer wins, too!

I used to live in a place where I was a short walking distance from a "falafel" restaurant in a popular strip of restaurants and other small stores. Pretty much every weekend (since it was a "touristy" area), at around lunch time, they'd have one of their staff standing outside the restaurant with a tray of falafel balls, holding a pair of tongs, and offering a free falafel ball to everyone who walked by.

I took one whenever I passed by and saw them offering one. Yes, I knew it was a marketing tactic to get me to eat at the restaurant. And yes, as a result, I did eat there sometimes!

I loved the free falafel balls - and even though I knew why they were doing it, I still loved it!

They kept doing it, week after week, so it must have been working for them... (I've moved since then, so I'm not sure if they're still doing it today...)

Best wishes,

Dien

Default ThanX Don Alm - Fantastic Idea - Browser Buck Coupons

Thanks Don,

Actually the Browser Buck Coupon is BRILLIANT.

A PR Expert just referred me to a Richard Branson Ad.

It's a Video of 3 People COMPLAINING they are Addicted
to Virgin Airlines (Something something VIP Program)

Coupons - Yada Yada - nobody cares

But if You GIVE THEM A DOLLAR - Hooray.

Same with Sir Richard.

The Rascal really makes his Benefits list INTERESTING by putting it into
the form of a Complaint.

(Exact same reason I wear a PINK Chain Maile tie. If you don't get ATTN
First - nobody LISTENS and VALUES what you say.)

Anyway.

The link to the Video is below.

Bet you didn't know Richard Branson Borrowed a Psychological concept from you!

Thanks,
Glenn

Default Another situation - doing favors for a murderer...

Hi Cornell and everyone,

I have fired people for giving things away with out express permission to do so. In fact my daughter is a supervisor at a fast food and an employee there was recently terminated for handing out a cookie for free.

And yes many of the food places have guidelines for throwing out food and they also have guidelines about giving it away because of liability...but no matter the case... until the clock points to the hour and minute for disposal that food remains the property of the owner and is a profit item that is to be sold.
Thanks Cornell - I completely respect your point of view.

One way I see it is that, businesses give out "freebies" all the time, with the express purpose of getting more business.

What's more "unusual" here is that it is the customer now doing it. But if businesses can give out a "freebie", then why not customers, too?

(The difference with tipping is that restaurant staff expect to be tipped, whereas Glenn's idea is completely surprising and unexpected...)

"Giving" something also doesn't have to be material. Some people give genuine compliments, because they know it will improve their success.

One example could be a romantic date. The guy knows (it might be subconsciously) that if he genuinely compliments something about his date to her, then the date will be more likely to end positively. Does that make it a bad thing to do? (I think most guys would be guilty, if it were a crime to give a compliment to your date...)

I think in many cases, these kinds of "favors" we give become ingrained in us as habits.

These are all just variants on "reciprocity"... It works because it is built deeply into our inner human psychology.

By the way, I'm reading a very interesting book at the moment about Japanese culture. This book says that giving gifts is built into Japanese culture, because the gift-giver then knows that they can get a favor in return at some point from the recipient, if they need it.

(If someone doesn't like to be "obligated" after receiving a gift, they know that to no longer have the obligation, they should give some kind of gift in return back to the gift-giver as soon as possible. Once they give a gift in return, they know that they no longer have any obligation...)

Quote:
Now if the person says thanks for the ticket and gives the customer something in return of his own that is one thing...also if the person pays for the giveaway that is acceptable...but to give away his employer's goods - unless authorized to do so is ....well......in my eyes that is theft.

I also have had establishments offer something free just before closing ...saying that they were just going to throw it out anyhow....but it was after the deadline....whether they had permission to do so or not is unknown...but I had to presume so.

I guess it is up to the individual to decide on this...the lesson is good...the "reason" for doing it does not sit well with me.

Let's leave it at that.

Cornell
If there is a person at "fault" here (which I don't think we know completely for sure, since we don't know all the conditions), then it was the employee's fault for doing something he shouldn't have... Also, while in this case he's probably an employee (because of his youth), in other cases it could often be the restaurant owner (as, to my understanding, it is not uncommon for restaurant owners work in their own restaurants). When this has happened to me, I never really thought about it, but I always assumed that it was the business owner who was serving me and who was giving me the free stuff. (When this has happened to me, it's usually at independently-owned take-away type restaurants.)

There were places I knew in the past that would "regularly" give you additional free stuff with your order... And yeah, I kept going back! (This was when I lived in a different area from where I live now.)

There is one "fish and chips" store near where I live, which is probably the most expensive "fish and chips" store in the area. However, they are probably the most successful too. A couple things they do is, (1) they do have higher quality food, for example, their frying oil seems fresher and better quality than the other ones, and (2) they often seem to give you a little bit extra with your order, that you didn't ask for, for free. (I don't go there often, though, because I don't like eating too much fried food - I'm more health-conscious now than I used to be...)

Anyway... back to the more general topic...

The topic of "reciprocity" has come up now and then... But what I like is that these are completely new "angles" on the standard lessons...!

From one of the earlier discussions here (several years ago), the following link was posted... This is an article about a guy who used reciprocity to get a convicted murderer, who happened to be a serial killer, to confess to his other murders...

One of the "tools" which was used was doing favors for the serial killer... Like getting the murderer an independent medical checkup he wanted, getting him a specific book he wanted to read, etc.

Is it ethical to do favors for a serial killer? The end result was they got more confessions, and this helped to bring "closure" to the families of some of the victims...

Serial Murder, He Wrote
http://articles.latimes.com/2006/aug...tion/na-hess10

(The article is 4 pages long - the links to the next pages are at the end of page 1. The part about doing favors for the serial killer is at the start of page 3.)

Anyway, it's a good read... It was first posted on Sowpub here...

Best wishes,

Dien
