Default It's that time of the year.....

This is Thanksgiving weekend in Canada....so to the rest of you Canucks on the board ...Happy Thanksgiving.

It is a bit different this year....there is no Thanksgiving dinner....so it is just me and the pooch.

My oldest, in another city, is involved with other relatives this year. The youngest is also in another city working the weekend. The second oldest, while here, is also working a double shift this holiday day.

It is 5:30pm and just came in from the great Canadian outdoors and a balmy 46 degrees Fahrenheit.

Have been winding down the garden and getting it ready to go to sleep for another year...sad to see it go but everything has its time.

On a positive note.... it means that another great Canadian winter is on its way....looks like it might be a good one too....the squirrels are fatter than usual and so are the Bluejays and racoons. The Bluejays are storing food in caches like crazy and the squirrels are hiding an abnormal amount of peanuts this year. The squirrels usually just sit and eat the peanuts but for the last 2 weeks they have been eating one and burying 2.

I think it might just be time to get the snow removal equipment out and serviced...there has been some snow north of us and that is a pretty good indicator that its acomin' thisaway in the next few weeks.

You can tell it is getting dusk as the rabbits just emerged from the weedlot and are heading for the hay cubes I put out for them just before coming inside and I hear the Bluejays fighting over the peanuts just outside the door....that's not good...it means they finished off theirs and are robbing the raccoons peanut stash for later tonight.

So now 'tis time to get our Thanksgiving dinner ready...pooch is having some chicken, veggies, and dressing...and me a couple of good old Sloppy Joe's and potato chips.....a favorite on colder nights.

And of course will offer thanks at the meal.... for living in a great country....that all my children are healthy, safe, and employed....that we have safe harbor and protection from the elements and food for the table (in this day and age there are way, way too many people and families that are experiencing lack and hardship)....and of course for friends that appreciate my sometimes warped sense of humor.

So again...to my fellow Canucks...Happy Thanksgiving.

Cornell,

I hope you (and the other Canucks here) have a great Canadian Thanksgiving!

I found this helpful link about Canadian Thanksgiving...

What is Canadian Thanksgiving, Anyway?
http://www.good.is/posts/what-is-can...sgiving-anyway

I like Canada, the times I've visited there... I've spent a little bit of time in Toronto, and also visited Vancouver. Oh, I've also been on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.

Back in my physics days, while I was working in Sydney (Australia), my boss was from Calgary. (He ended up going back to being a Professor at the University of Calgary, where he still is today.)

I've always wondered - why are Canadians so funny? Not many people know, but so many comedians and comedic actors in the US are actually Canadians (Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, and Michael J. Fox spring to mind).

When a country's currency is made up of "loonies" and "toonies" - I think it's a good sign of a country with a great sense of humo(u)r!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Best wishes,

Dien

It's the great influence of the Scots and Irish, I'm sure LOL

One of these days we'll get across the pond to visit Canada - I know that Sandy loves Vancouver and I'd love to cross the Canadian prairies ....

Hi Dien:

Thanks.

Don't know why the number of comedians are so prolific other than Canadians in general seem to have a greater sense of humor about everything...perhaps an overall happy outlook towards everything.

Thanks for the Thanksgiving link....it pretty much summed it up correctly.

When I was a kid we used to have rotating threshing bees at the different farms... where all the local neighbors would congregate to help a farmer on a specific day bringing in the crops with the grains running through the threshing machines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Threshing_machine) to separate the grain. While the men and male children labored in the fields and running the thressher, the women folk were preparing the huge meal served late in the evening after the crops were in....fond memories of this though you knew when the day was done that you had indeed done a days work.

This usually preceded the Thanksgiving Day but nowadays farmers are still taking in crops well after Thanksgiving Day.

Nice to know you have visited our fair country and found it pleasing.

Thanks again.

Hi Margaret:

Thanks for the wishes.

How about that...I have a little Scot and Irish in me.

If you do get across the waters I hope we will be able to have a short visit at some point in your travels. Alan Hirji visited a few years ago and I was going to drive to Toronto to visit with him but then there was a problem with one of his connecting flights and the time frame for visiting was no longer available.

Happy Thanksgiving Cornell from a fellow Canuck.

Funny the first time I heard that term "Canuck" was when I went to the U.S lol. I also like how you converted the temperature in your post into Fahrenheit

I'm spending time with family here. So just a quick Happy Thanksgiving to you and the other Sowpub family.

Cheers

Duane

P.S
Thanks for the reminder ...about the SNOW.

Hi Duane:

Happy Thanksgiving right back to you.

Yes good old Fahrenheit....guess I may be locked in a time warp...I see Celsius but the brain thinks in Fahrenheit...same with kilometers and miles.

Sorry about the snow comment but winter is acomin'......just had to fire up the furnace for the first time this season a few minutes ago as daughter was complaining because house temp was sitting at 12 C ( roughly 54 F).

Time to get the Long Johns out of storage me thinks.

Hey Phil:

Good one on Vancouver or Victoria.

I lived in Delta in late 60's early 70's...one block off ocean...loved it...people were fantastic.

Arrived there Dec 20th and on Christmas eve my wife spotted several people coming through the gate at the back of the property.

A knock on the door.

There stood 11 neighbours all bearing food platters and house warming paraphenalia welcoming us to the neighborhood and some extras as they felt we wouldn't have had time to get acclimated for Christmas day.

Spent a lot of time in Kelowna also...beautiful, friendly destination for a retirement scenario.
