Default Make money from the oil spill without getting dirty

kinda amusing..watching the government do nothing, listening to the liars at BP, doing desperation efforts that a 7 year old knows will not work. Now, they are gonna cram golf balls and tires into the well to clog it into submission,

Mean while, on the silent side of the activity , the hazMat division of ..guess who..Halliburton gets a blank check to hire folks to wander around the , now, polluted areas, with plastic bags , capturing the ever elusive tarballs.

Not very surprising really. Oilman Pickens says not to worry that the marshes will clean up the mess by themselves ? in 400 years, maybe.

so , if you know anyone who wants to earn 25-40 an hour, wandering through the marshes, capturing tar babies, contact the Gulf Coast area employment security offices.

or make a zillion , and come up with a real solution .

nice seeing yall again . it has been a while .

The OttiMat™ is an innovative product that uses recycled human hair to repair and prevent the environmental damage caused by oil spills. Comprised of 99% recycled human hair and 1% Polypropylene Skrim, OttiMat adsorbs (holds on to) oil. OttiMat™ patented technology is environmentally friendly, non-hazardous and all natural.

Thanks Bill...

There's a lot of useful stuff there...

In your second link, it's good if people can do something to help. It's a real disaster. Every news item seems to be more bad news.

On the other hand, your first link is also an inspirational entrepreneurial story too.

From the http://www.ottimat.com website...

Quote:
The Idea: The Ottimat was invented by Phil McCory, a hair stylist in Huntsville, Alabama. While watching television coverage of the 1989 Valdez oil spill, McCory noticed the difficulty volunteers were having cleaning the fur of otters.

McCory thought, “ if animal fur can trap and hold spilled oil, why can’t human hair?”

In a home experiment, McCory stuffed 5 pounds of hair he'd cut into a pair of his wife's pantyhose. He tied the ankles of the nylons together to form a ring shaped collection bundle. Then, filling his son's baby pool with water, he poured a gallon of used motor oil in the pool and then dunked the pantyhose. Two minutes later he pulled out the nylons and noticed the water was crystal clear. Not a trace of oil was left in the water, said McCory.
Another link on the site ("the reusability factor") explains how the "OttiMats" can be reused. That's because oil is not "absorbed" by the mats, but "adsorbed" by them. That means that the oil sticks to the surface of the hair, and does actually get inside the strands of hair. Because of that, the "OttiMats" can be washed and reused, and 98% of the oil can be recovered.

What a fantastic, inspirational story!

How many times has a great invention or business idea come about because someone, working somewhere, simply noticed something interesting and useful?

Then, they took it that one step further, and did something with the idea...

It reminds me of other great "ordinary person invents something extraordinary" stories...

Like the story of Bette Nesmith Graham inventing Liquid Paper. She was a secretary, and mixed up her own batches of white paint to paint over her typing mistakes, so she could retype over them. She eventually started selling her special paint to others, and Liquid Paper was born!

Harvey Brody's story of inventing the "Zoom Spout oiler" is like this too. He was repairing typewriters to make extra money. He'd buy broken typewriters very cheaply, fix them up so they worked, then resell them. That's how he funded his college education. He found it hard to get oil in some of the nooks and crannies of the typewriter. So he got a flexible tube, attached it to an oil can, and voila! The Zoom Spout oiler was born!

These kinds of stories are all inspirational...

Great link - Thanks for sharing it, Bill!

Best wishes,

Dien

Default Here are some simple inventions that have made big profits...

I don't think the age of simple inventions is over...

But first, I found this interesting article on simple inventions. From 1931!

However, I think the lessons in the article are still relevant today...

It mentions various simple inventions. These made their inventors rich - yet they're quite simple.

Inventions like metal bottle-caps, collapsible umbrellas, and safety pins. We use these in our lives all the time.

The article is called "There's Money in Simple Inventions." It's from "Modern Mechanics and Inventions" magazine, July, 1931. You can read it at the following link...

http://blog.modernmechanix.com/2009/...le-inventions/

(There are two pages. You click on one of the links after the first page, to see the second page.)

However, there are still simple inventions succeeding today.

Here's a simple seat-belt height adjuster, so that seat belts will fit children better. They'll also help improve safety.

When you look at what it is, it's pretty simple. It just took someone with a good idea, and the impulse to push it further than the "just an idea" stage...

Here's another invention. It helps keep your washing dry from any passing rain shower.

http://www.rotamate.net

It's essentially a plastic sheet that lies on top of your washing line. Yet - it could help your clothes stay dry in a rain shower! Great for places with a lot of rain.

These inventions are from the British TV show "Dragon's Den." (It's similar to the American TV show "Shark Tank", and to the Canadian "Dragon's Den" TV show).

Best wishes,

Dien

Default Thanks Phil, this Gulf Oil Spill is just the beginning...

We're just at the beginning of the mess. Just hope the hurricanes stay out of the gulf until they get the thing plugged.

Lawyers are always some of the first on the scene of accidents, often before the first responders are finished with the job.

I've got a lot to say about all this...very soon.
