Default Get by on 2 or 3 hours of sleep a night?

It's the middle of the night where I am (as I write this), and I really need to get to sleep...

Wouldn't it be great if you could squeeze 8 hours of sleep into 2 or 3?

Well, some researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison promise just that!

They say with some kind of magnetic stimulation device attached to your head, you can go straight into deep sleep... And squeeze a full night of sleep into 2 or 3 hours...

Who couldn't use more time?

Here's the article, for night owls who still need to wake up early...

Machine Means End To Sleepless Nights

Cheers,

Dien

P.S. The other way to get less sleep is possibly through "polyphasic sleep" (also known as "Da Vinci sleep"), where you sleep in naps of 20 to 30 minutes, in 6 equally spaced times per day (for a total of around 3 hours of sleep daily). One guy did it - his journal of his experience is very fascinating... http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/200...yphasic-sleep/

I seem to recall Kramer attempting this.

As I remember, it didn't turn out so well

An interesting concept - I'll have to check out the blog

As I understood it, that polyphasic sleeping was only for very short term. The reason is that it takes (for most circumstances) a good couple hours of sleep before deep, or REM, sleep occurs. If one goes without REM sleep too long, it literally makes one crazy. This is partly the concept behind mind control and certain types of behavior modification. Without REM sleep, or adequate sleep, you're putty in the hands of the controller.

Most studies have concluded that to go much below a TOTAL of 6 hours sleep in 24 (including naps) is to risk one's health. I don't know about magnetic anything in this regards, however. Seems a bit of a stretch to me. Have to look into it.

BTW one doesn't have to take a regular nap to have one...the brain can (and does) just wink out for various short episodes if one is quite lacking in sleep. The theory is that this may account for at least some of the high accident toll during certain hours. If you've ever driven somewhere and arrived without recalling all the trip, you've probably experienced this phenomenon. Don't drive tired, folks!

It is said Napolean Bonapart could do this. I can't I need my 8 hours sometimes even more. I am like Ronald Regan. I have to have my nap.

Default Deep Sleep Will NOT Be Given Up

Sandi,

Thanks for mentioning different sleep.

Research was done. All involved had to stay awake as Long as possible then sleep. Research team monitored what Type of sleep they got.

Results = deep sleep in the amount you had missed.

If you stayed awake for 2 days you went right into Deep Sleep - bypassing all other stages - and had 2 day's worth of deep sleep - approx 4 hours. If you stayed awake for 3 days you had 6 hours deep sleep. 4 Days and 8 hours deep sleep.

The body is willing to Sacrifice all other sleep except Deep Sleep. And it keeps a Tab on that. Interesting.

I once stayed awake for 52 hours straight after 6 hours sleep. Then had 4 hours sleep and was right as rain for another 48 hour stint.

The Trick to not falling asleep was to keep Moving. If I sat still I Instantly felt my body "disconnecting". At which point I Moved to re-establish the connection.

Towards the end of the 52 hours I was feeling "odd". As if I'd taken some drugs. Concentration was shot. Ability to think logically was diminished - could Focus on one thing at a time, no multitasking for me. Eyesight was fine - unless I sat still and then they would Waver as I started to drift off. Speech was not effected.

If you want to feel out of it, don't smoke pot, just stay awake for two days.

Michael, thanks for your reply and interesting observations. You will note, however, that I said 'for most circumstances' and that certainly does not apply in the applications you mentioned as most folks don't go to that extreme. Ordinarily (please note) REM sleep occurs after approximately 2 hours of normal sleep.

Yes, I'm back to myself again. Could not answer before...couldn't think...too much pain...etc. I'm out of the hospital (finally!), on meds that confuse me still at times, but doing much better. Don't know who cares (if anyone) but just FYI. If you ever want to avoid sleeping, just check in to a hospital...every 15 minutes night and day check this, check that.

We don't live in a Democracy. We live in a republic. There is a real difference. We elect idiots many times that is the problem but it still is the best in the world, bar none.
