Apparently, Register.com has been sending renewal notices to domain owners even when the domain is *months* from expiration. The unsuspecting domain owner then "renews" the domain for $29.95 which is considerably more than most registrars are charging. What actually happens is that the domain is then transferred to Register.com. I think I got some mail pieces from them but I trashed it because I knew they weren't my registrar.
