Yanik,

Sounds like a very worthy cause. I don't have any experience w/ such an event, but a couple thoughts come to mind.

Regarding the merchant account, perhaps you could get a local business (i.e., co-sponsor) to use their account (legal?), with them paying the merchant "discount" as their donation. And/or, work with a local bank (i.e., co-sponsor #2) to set up an escrow account to hold all donations. When the surgery has been performed, all bills are paid directly from the escrow account to the hospital.

I'm certain the bank or a lawyer could best advise on how that might be set up.
