Looking for Audio Recorder

I’m interested in purchasing a small recorder, perhaps that could even clip on, to record both at home and while I’m out speaking.*

I’m looking for the very best, highest quality currently available.* I also want to be able to download the audio file directly to the computer to be transcribed later or put on the website as an audio file. The quality of the audio should be suitable for internet use.

You want to have software to run your recordings through...this is the best way to do it...NONE of the portable voice recorders have the features of a studio...which is what most programs are.

I have Sonic and Audacity...and between them they can get any job done.

Most of the small recorders don't have enough bottom to them...you can add base, take out noise, eliminate spaces, gaps, coughs and guffaws with the software.

Go that route and try the Olympus brand, but, the RCA I wrote about recently does a good job of getting the voice to the sofware.

The RCA RP5030 works fine. BUT, the Olympus DS-4000 is a good mid priced alternative.

Since you are a Mac user, you're already one step ahead of the game here.

Open up "Garage Band" that is in your iLife apps....

That's some really nice editing software.

You can import anything you've got in your iTunes library into it.

If you've got an iPod, there are a few really good recorders out there that will attach to it and allow you to record onto it.

If you don't have a iPod - get one :-)

I've got a good iPod and I use Sound Studio for editing purposes.

Might not be what you're looking for but I use an older version of this one....

It works great when I'm speaking right into it or when I set it on the middle of a table a few feet away to record group conversations.

I've never had the need for any high end recorder so don't know if this would do it for you or not.

But for the price, you can't beat it.

I've been looking into what James suggested - that is, recording on your iPod...

I haven't tried any of these out (yet) though! (Right now I'm getting by on a cheap MP3 player with a record function, which is fine for my purposes but the quality is not suitable for podcasting or broadcasting).

I've used an Olympus voice recorder before (mine is an Olympus DS-330). However, the problem is I've misplaced the installation CD, and I got a new computer. Olympus doesn't have the drivers online for you to download (they have a "downloads" section online, but they're mostly upgrades if you have the software already - none are the actual drivers you need). Also, because mine is an "old" model (about 3 years), I've received no support whatsoever from Olympus - I can't even buy a replacement for the CD (since it's not a current model). That means I now have no way of transferring files from the Olympus to my new computer. So - I would only recommend an Olympus if you never lose the CD that comes with it... Put the CD in a safe or something like that. Since what I have right now is an expensive Olympus paperweight... (However, the product was pretty good - until I needed any support from Olympus.)

Please give us an update once you find something!

I use my iPOD for recording my thoughts, and my computer for when I am doing teleseminars, etc.

However, I am looking at this as my next audio purchase...
