Default Word out there is... Insert enough Speculation and one will eventually be right

Phil,

Thanks for the inside scoop.

Other words are...

=> Apple is interested in Twitter
=> Microsoft is interested in Twitter
=> Twitter's CEO - Evan Williams, the guy who started Blogger which he sold to Google and then later left Google - has been in talks with Google about ??? BUT he has also gone on record as saying he believes Twitter will remain independent; While Google is on record as saying you don't have to Buy everything you can come to work-together arrangements

Twitter's advantage is Momentum and Existing Users. Just about ALL newspaper in Oz have Follow Us On Twitter somewhere on their site; news sources also follow people (prof journalists as well as civi journos for obtaining real time news and info). The CNN vs Ashton Kutcher race to one million followers was tremendous free publicity for Twitter.

Oddly, Twitter, as far as I know, doesn't allow people to add Google Ads to their own profiles. Nor does Twitter put them on - which, while not making them money, keeps true numbers hidden from Google (if Google knew how much could be made from their ads any offer from them may not be as high as otherwise made).

Interesting to see what Google comes up with when it goes to public beta
