....used them to build something strong, powerful, enduring, and well thought out. Imagine how magnificent their futures would become!

Just like your shoe tying client, Gordon, they might even amaze themselves!

I tried for a year to teach Linda, a 16 year old girl who spent her lifetime in institutions, to tie her shoe. I would sit in front of her, sign to her, "Linda, tie your shoes" and we would get part way through.

Linda was "low functioning". She was alone for the holidays, so twice I brought her home to my rambunctious family. I was a ripe old 18 and 19 myself at the time. I was amazed after a day with my clan, Linda would actually come to me and sign. She came to me with this amazed look on her face and signed, "Flower!" Something we all take for granted just thrilled her socks off!

I am not sure where Linda is today. I have no idea whether she learned to tie her shoes or not. Somehow I doubt it.

In my life I have had many balloons popped. I am grateful for them. Not one to mope in the corner, I chose instead to look at the popped balloons as stepping stones to future opportunities.

Without those balloons, I would not be me, would I?
