![]() I went into a McDonald's restaurant for lunch today. On the menu I spotted fried chicken served with steamed rice. At McDonald's!
Well, maybe it's not that surprising. Let me explain. My mother got very ill quite suddenly, so I had to fly to see her at a moment's notice. Thank God, my mother now seems to be recovering fast, and I pray that her recovery continues.... I'll probably be here a couple weeks or so, while my mother recovers. I'm still online, but please don't try to call me for a couple weeks or so, since I won't be there to answer. I still have access to email and internet facilities, so feel free to email me.... I did eat lunch at McDonald's today. Instead of the steamed rice, though, I had the McDonald's fried chicken with french fries. But it is really true, here in Jakarta, Indonesia, at McDonald's you can get McDonald's fried chicken with steamed rice. (This is where my parents are currently living, in Jakarta, Indonesia.... My family traveled a lot when I was growing up, and my parents still haven't stopped traveling!) The people here really like fried chicken (I think they prefer it to hamburgers), and rice is a staple of the diet. So, in addition to the usual range of burgers, McDonald's here also serves fried chicken and steamed rice. This is a good example of paying attention to what your market wants.... And I just thought of another example.... In Australia, McDonald's serves a burger called the "McOz" burger. The McOz burger has beetroot in it -- lots of Aussies like their burgers and sandwiches with beetroot, and McDonald's in Australia has also accommodated the local wants. McDonald's is without question doing several things right as a business.... Paying attention to what their specific markets want seems to be one of their practices we can learn from.... Best wishes, Dien Rice |

![]() ... the first we vacationed in Maine, I was very hungry by the time we got out of the airport.
We stopped at the first place I saw, a Burger King. And I was totally stunned to see that a staple of their menu was the lobster roll! In our visits, we've now stopped at many Burger Kings & McDonalds in Maine, and they all offered lobster rolls. GOOD lobster rolls, too. McDonald's and lobster. BK & lobster. No matter how you say those words, it's still hard to imagine. Best wishes to you and your mother, Dien. Richard Dennis |

![]() order one of those lobster rolls!
I was in Boston not too long ago and now that I think of it, I'm surprised that Burger King and McDonald's weren't serving clam chowder, since every other restaurant in Boston has clam chowder (quite tasty too).... Thank you Richard for your well-wishes.... Dien |
