Hi Steve: Thanks for asking about the mosquitoes and the comments on the pics. Yes I use the mosquito dunks in the gutters. I purchase the donut style and crumble them...then a few pinches in each gutter when I see larvae in the gutters. A 6 pack of the dunks generally lasts me for 2 seasons. With the pools there are 2 problems if the pea gravel isn't added...mosquitoes and algae. I don't use the pea gravel, so as a result I use the dunks in them also...algae was more of an aesthetic concern than anything else and before this season I was using barley grasss to control it...this season I have started using an organic fungicide called Actinovate, and have found that the dripping from the plants and the overspray that lands in the pools has nullified the algae. So true about the gardening and feeding oneself. On the group we are seeing more and more younger people garden, as well as seniors who could no longer do in ground gardening starting to garden again. And then of course we are also seeing people who have never been able to grow anything having their own successful garden. It lends itself to balcony and deck gardening...plus there are numerous members in other countries growing on rooftops. Due to the nature of the soil here on the property I had been growing in wooden containers (64 of them). It was five years ago when I was facing repairing or replacing half of those containers for the following year's growing season that I stumbled across the RGGS. It intrigued me but was a bit dubious...so I set up 2 gutters that season to test it out. Other than some problems with tomatoes, the system far surpassed the wooden containers...and with the cost of repair or replace being almost identical to setting up the RGGS, I scrapped my old system and went full speed ahead with the RGGS for the following season. With some tweaking I solved the tomato problem and have been going full tilt with the RGGS ever since. We have seen a few failures with it from members of the group, but in almost all of those cases it was because they simply didn't follow the system. My parents went through the Great Depression and carried that self- sustaining experience for the rest of their years...which was fortunate for me as it was instilled in me also.....I have always had a garden wihich feeds us during the summer and stocks the shelves and freezer for the winter. Thanks again....off to pick some sweet corn from the kiddie pools and some tomatoes from the gutters for a great summer dinner. Cornell |
