Do you want to increase your options?
Hi Gordon,
Many people sail through life without really figuring out what it is they want to do... I think what it partly is about - maybe - is people want to increase their options in life... The more skills you have, the more options you have... Well, anyway, I think that I think that way (partly)... Which can be a problem too, if you overdo it (as I probably have)! On the other hand, you can also be too focused, with too narrow a set of skills... The problem with that is that shifts in technology or culture or demographics could make your narrow set of skills obsolete... When you have a broad set of skills, it's less likely that all your skills will become obsolete! Here's a quick example... I have a friend who's a professional freelance editor, who lives in Australia (where I also live). I think he has often been hired by publishers to edit the books they're planning to publish. I remember having a conversation with him over a meal a few years ago... He was telling me how it was getting harder and harder for him to get work. The reason why is because companies were outsourcing their editing work to cheaper places, like India... As he lives in Australia, he has to charge higher prices due to the much higher cost of living compared to India... Otherwise he couldn't survive... When I first got to know him (almost 20 years ago now), he took an overseas holiday every year... When I had that dinner with him a few years ago, he had stopped doing that - because he could no longer afford it... That's an example of what I'm talking about... Best wishes, Dien Quote:
