Unfortunately, Real Estate is one of the most competitive and difficult subjects for getting high rankings in the search engines. However, the more specific you are with your keywords, the better off you'll be.

For instance, be geographically specific. Instead of using "Real Estate" as your main keyword, use something like "New Homes in Albany NY" or "Power of sale properties in Gnome Alaska".

Also, when submitting your site to search engines, also submit to the SE's directory as some engines favor sites that are listed in both.

Have you thought of web based community directories? Even though they get far less traffic than Google or Hotbot, some prospective home buyers look to these directories when choosing where to call home.

Check out Search Engine Watch. It's one of the most comprehensive and no-hype sites on SE's on the web.
